When I save a picture in IE or use the Image Toolbar to
save a picture in IE, my previously saved images do not
appear in the "Save Picture" box -- I can't see any
previously saved image files. However, if I go to Windows
Explorer I can see the saved images fine. Not sure how to
correct or where to look. Thanks for any help on this. John

Hans,

Sorry for the late reply (and thanks for your workarounds.
I didn't do those things mentioned. For some reason I
can't still can't see pictures in my "Save Picture" Box.
Also, curiously, if I rename an image prior to saving it,
when I go to Windows Explorer I notice the file has the
type of file id that prompts me to select some other
application to view the file, because Windows Explorer
apparently doesn't recognize it. Hope you follow me. Is
there something I may have unchecked, etc. in IE Options?
Thanks again. John

No, I don't follow you. Let's say you want to save a file, and that
that file is a JPEG. What happens? What would you like to happen?

Hello Hans,

Thanks for your reply. When I save a JPEG, I would like to
see, in the "Save Picture" box, any other JPEG image files
I have already saved; but I don't see any files at all.

Here's what's been happening:

First I save an image in IE using the pop-up icon that
contains the Save ("diskette") icon. That brings up
the "Save Picture" box which shows me where the file will
be saved, etc. Normally any previously saved image files
can be seen in this "Save Picture" box in the file
location that I've selected. Now I never see any
previously saved image files in the "Save Picture" box; it
looks empty, even though image files have been saved
there. I have to go to Windows Explorer to see all of the
image files I saved.

Regarding your previous workaround suggestions: because I
normally save files as JPEG images, I don't normally get
involved with .bmp or .gif so I don't accidentally use the
drop down button for them and therefore not see JPEG
images. I also regularly use the "Delete Files" button to
clear out IE cache. I've tried clearing out the cache
prior to saving images but the situation described above
recurs.

Also, to describe the other thing that happens with this
situation, if I rename an image file prior to saving it in
the "Save Picture" box, and I then go to Windows Explorer
to see the image file (since the "Save Picture" box
doesn't show me anything), the renamed image file shows an
icon different from the other previously saved, and not
renamed, image files. It's the icon that will prompt me to
identify which application to use to open the file,
because Windows Explorer will not automatically open it
when I doubleclick the renamed image file.

Please let me know if you have additional questions;
thanks again for your help. Best, John

Have you tried just typing *.jpg or *.jpeg in the File name box?

In fact, to get either at the same time I would try entering
*.jp*

To see your files just ignore those fancy new controls that XP provides
and use just the File name: box to do all of your Directory searching,
File name selection, and file type selection, all by using pattern matching
or AutoComplete in that box.

BTW the Help for that box actually hints at this possibility ;o
(Press F1 while the cursor is in that field.)

I find the new features slightly erratic. Sometimes they allow you
to do what you want and sometimes they don't do what you expect.
Fortunately a File name: override always seems to be there as a
reliable alternative.

Thanks for your suggestions but it didn't work. I should
be able to see all of the image files I saved previously
in the "Save Picture" box. It didn't seem that IE had
this situation when I first started using it, but now it
does. Any other possibilities?

Thanks again. John

There is one other detail I can think about: those images are not
saved as JPEG but as BMP. Empty your cache and save them again.

Just to make sure: you have Windows set to display the file
extensions, don't you?
