Saved contact incorrectly

I have many contacts where the contact has been saved by Outlook with the
name in the wrong order. All the name fields are correct, but the contact
itself when opened shows, for instance, Smith Steven, in the heading (the
blue bar at the top). I am using Outlook 2003 and these contacts may have
been imported from Outlook XP.

This really only presents a problem when I use the address book (such as
when I am using the 'To:' when sending an email) when these contacts are all
listed by the surnames not their first names.

Does anyone know how I can fix this without manually creating these contacts
again (as there are over one hundred that need to be fixed)?

You have introduced far too many variables for anyone to solve your
equation.
You failed to specify the view to which you are referring and by which field
that view is sorted.
You failed to clarify whether these Contacts were imported or not.
You failed to indicate the evidence that "Outlook saved Contacts in the
wrong order." Outlook saves Contacts in the order you specify, which you
also failed to reveal.
Start again at the beginning please, and include this information so we can
answer you.

Hi Russ,

Thanks for your feedback but I did put all of that information in my
previous post but perhaps it was a little garbled:
1) Not using a view. Viewing contacts in address book. The contacts
display correctly in Outlook.
2) I believe the affected contacts were imported from Outlook XP
3) All the name fields (File As, Full name) are correct but the heading bar
(the blue bar at the top of windows in Windows XP - whatever it's official
name is) shows the name of the contact in reverse order, ie Smith Steven.

Point (3) is why I think Outlook has saved it incorrectly.

Regards
Ben

Further to above, I have just discovered that if I open one of the affected
contacts in Outlook and change the name this name change is not reflected in
the "header bar". This is not the case for my other contacts. The address
book also shows the old information. Clearly it is picking up this
information rather than the actual name fields.

The "heading bar" refers to what view?
If all you are trying to do is sort the Outlook Address Book, that's the
single most posted answer in this group:
Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address books > Outlook Address Book > Change. > Set your sort order there

Hi Russ,

1) This issue does not in any way relate to views. As previously stated,
all contacts appear correctly in views in Outlook.
2) The address book is sorted by first name, last name. All contacts other
than these few (well several hundred) sort correctly. The address book
displays the name for these contacts as it appears in the header bar in the
Outlook contact record not as first name, last name.
3) The full name for these contacts is correct. All name fields are correct.
4) As previously stated, the only place in Outlook where there is a problem
is if I open an individual contact in its own window. The problem is then in
the "header bar" where it shows 'Smith Steven' and this does not change even
when the name is changed completely. I could type in Mary Ellis and it will
still show 'Smith Steven' in the "header bar" (what is the bar on the top of
windows called?)

The only thing that is wrong with the contacts is the name it displays in
the "header bar". This is the data that needs to be corrected. Please
forget about views, sorting, name fields, etc. I need to know how to get
Outlook to correct this.

Ben

Hi Russ,

Thanks for your feedback but I did put all of that information in
my
previous post but perhaps it was a little garbled:
1) Not using a view. Viewing contacts in address book. The
contacts
display correctly in Outlook.
2) I believe the affected contacts were imported from Outlook XP
3) All the name fields (File As, Full name) are correct but the
heading
bar
(the blue bar at the top of windows in Windows XP - whatever it's
official
name is) shows the name of the contact in reverse order, ie Smith
Steven.

Point (3) is why I think Outlook has saved it incorrectly.

You failed to specify the view to which you are referring and by
which
field
that view is sorted.
You failed to clarify whether these Contacts were imported or

I have many contacts where the contact has been saved by
Outlook
with
the
name in the wrong order. All the name fields are correct, but
the
contact
itself when opened shows, for instance, Smith Steven, in the
heading
(the
blue bar at the top). I am using Outlook 2003 and these
contacts
may
have
been imported from Outlook XP.

This really only presents a problem when I use the address
book
(such
as
when I am using the 'To:' when sending an email) when these
contacts
are
all
listed by the surnames not their first names.

Does anyone know how I can fix this without manually creating
these
contacts
again (as there are over one hundred that need to be fixed)?

Great. That's what I had concluded originally but I was hoping that there
was an alternative. Thanks for attempting to help.

Hi Russ,

1) Note that my comments about contact records below only relate to the
two
hundred or so contact records that have this specific problem. Most of
the
contact records work normally.
2) The header is the only place other than in the address book that the
name appears in the format "Smith Steven". All of the name fields are
correct.
3) The address book displays the name exactly as it appears in the header
bar. If I change the name of the contact to something completely
different,
eg Mary Ellis, the header stays as 'Smith Steven', and when I open the
address book, the contact is still listed as 'Smith Steven'. If I then
open
the contact from the address book by double clicking on 'Smith Steven', it
displays the correct name as Mary Ellis.

This is why, as I have been saying all along, that I believe the
information
that is stored in the header bar is damaged/corrupted and therefore needs
to
be fixed.

Hi Russ,

1) This issue does not in any way relate to views. As previously
stated,
all contacts appear correctly in views in Outlook.
2) The address book is sorted by first name, last name. All contacts
other
than these few (well several hundred) sort correctly. The address book
displays the name for these contacts as it appears in the header bar in
the
Outlook contact record not as first name, last name.
3) The full name for these contacts is correct. All name fields are
correct.
4) As previously stated, the only place in Outlook where there is a
problem
is if I open an individual contact in its own window. The problem is
then
in
the "header bar" where it shows 'Smith Steven' and this does not change
even
when the name is changed completely. I could type in Mary Ellis and it
will
still show 'Smith Steven' in the "header bar" (what is the bar on the
top
of
windows called?)

The only thing that is wrong with the contacts is the name it displays
in
the "header bar". This is the data that needs to be corrected. Please
forget about views, sorting, name fields, etc. I need to know how to
get
Outlook to correct this.

Hi Russ,

Just as an aside, I would suggest to you that the information that is stored
in the header is not "of no consequence" as you suggest. Based on my
experience, if the address book is sorted by 'first name, last name' it is
this information that is used and displayed not the name fields. This might
be something you might like to take onboard for future issues.

That field is a derived field, just like the Full Name... field and File
As... field.
Derived fields rarely survive imports correctly because they get linked to
the improper name elements. That's why it is never a good idea to import
Contacts unless you must bring them from a different type of data source.
The Header itself is of no consequence because it is not used elsewhere. The
Full Name field and File As fields do have consequence because they are used
in other displays.
