Save Time tomorrow,
I just went to WindowsUpdate, If you go to the Windows Update site [and I
assume Microsoft Update] tomorrow you will be required to get the latest
version of the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) before
you can proceed.

This is one of the reasons I always go to the WindowUpdate/OfficeUpdate site
a day or two before Patch Tuesday, I hate surprises.

After allowing the install I was told that there were "No high-priority
updates for your computer are available" and so proceeded to check for
optional updates.
The WU site encountered a problem. And gave some "suggestions".
I just shut down my browser session and tried again.

This time it worked.
Again, this is why I go to WU before Patch Tuesday,
I HATE SURPRISES

Go to WU/MU NOW and get this out of the way if you have not already done so.

Note: This update WILL create a System Restore Point.

I just went to Windows update to discover nothing available, Tim - but I had
a vague memory of battling through one of these WGA updates last month. so I
checked the log, and there it was - 15th November.

So it seems I've already had my WGA re-baptism a month ago. How often do
they update it? Does anyone know?

I'm not sure of the answer with regard to WGA. I did encounter an WGA
update on a machine yesterday, but the normal user had been on vacation for
an extended period, so I'm not sure when it was last updated.

However, in a different way, testing WU and seeing whether your machine is
able to shutdown and restart properly is a good exercise before downloading
the critical patches. The patching process gets blamed for a good many
pre-existing issues that interfere with shutdown or restart.

But that isn't the worst of it,
if you set it the right way IT INSTALLS VISTA!

being available since, except for five Defender updates from WU.
