ServicePackFiles folder:

- is created only when you install a Service Pack
- is not present when you install a Service Pack using slipstreamed CD
(i.e., CD with SP integration already)
- is not created in the local machine, if the Service Pack was installed
from a network share.

That is a good gouge.

Clear, Concise, Coherent.

Written by Jupiter Jones?

"6. Do NOT delete "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles".

I don't seem to have that folder at all -- and I didn't delete it.

Is that a problem?

Then there is:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations

50.2 MB of .msi files on my box.

Why do we need to hang on to that?

Thanks.

I think I queried this folder at some time also.

Mine is 19.1 MB, 4 files
Contents of C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations\
At 25/02/06 5:35:41 PM 4 Files 18.10 MB
ACDSee for Pentax 2.0.msi 16.89 MB [A] 03/09/05 11:19:02 AM
Alt-Tab Task Switcher Powertoy for Windows XP.msi 325.51 KB [A] 21/08/04
7:07:48 PM
HTMLSlideShow.msi 600.5 KB [A] 19/07/04 2:33:10 PM
Image Resizer Powertoy for Windows XP.msi 312.56 KB [A] 15/08/05 2:10:50 PM

These are all MS installations, except the first (from a digital camera CD),
so I think I will delete these.

After all, they can always be downloaded again

Typically meant as backup repair files to fix from "add/remove programs",
It's used to store all the instructions required to 'install and uninstall
the program across many installation scenarios'.
You can buy software which extensively dumps file storage like this, for
example - Internet Tracks Washer 7 will wipe out internet and windows useless
directories. I would reccomend backing up important files to CD or DVD first
before wiping them out, or just buy a larger hard drive.

O.K.

Thanks.

But what do you mean by:
It's used to store all the instructions required to 'install and uninstall
the program across many installation scenarios'. [sic]

?

If I have installed the program already, I don't need to back it up.

In the unlikely event I need to uninstall it later and then reinstall it,
I'll simply download it again or install it from a CD.

Space on my hard drive is not a problem. I have plenty of space.

I just don't like garbage to build up.

If you don't prune frequently it can get away from you and you will never
catch up.

So it's something that should be done every day -- just like taking out the
garbage -- as Shenan Stanley has pointed out.
