Save or Open dialog option doesn't present itself

In using one of our mission critical applications, there is a point where you
select a "Submit" button. Now, for other PC's, a dialog box comes up that
gives the open to Save (you can navigate to the place you want it to be saved
to, etc.). However, when one of my people selects "Submit" it simply opens
the file in Notepad. I realize he is being a little fussy (all he has to do
at that point is select File/Save As, etc. etc.) but it just started doing
this and he wants the Save option. I have studied some Microsoft articles
and found a registry change as far as Save on the File Download box
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823057/en-us) but I'm not sure that is
really what the box is called....it is more of a Save As box, not a download
box.

Can anyone help me?

It may help someone to help you if you actually revealed the name of this
mission critical application".

I can't imagine why it would help but I'm happy to provide the info. The
application is web-based and is PowerSchool, now owned by Pearson Education.

It is in the Report module and, to see it, you have to be signed in. I
could send screen shots via email but probably not via TechNet. The bottom
line is that when the Submit button is selected it opens the output in
Notepad rather than providing the typical File Download dialog box which
Save, Open Cancel. or More Info buttons.

If you wouldn't mind providing an email address I could send you the screen
shots in Notepad or Open Office.

Thanks, Wes.

You could try the setting in that Knowledge Base article. If the output is
normally text, the browser might be regarding it as a "download" even
though it's a local application. If someone on this system previously
selected "Open" and checked the box to always open, the steps in the
article would revert to a prompt to open/save.

This sounds like a web based application. My guess is the script that is
driving the submit button is the weak link on the machine where this is
working differently. Why the script is not working is guesswork... Could be
security settings in the browser. Could be a using a browser that does not
support the script model used by the application. Or a plug-in from the
application that is blocked by security software used on this system or by
Internet Explorer's plug-in manager.

Greg,

Anything I could offer would only be guess work as I have no access to the
program.

Normally in Internet Explorer:

File Download dialog usually appears if downloading a file.

Save Web Page dialog appears if you click File and then Save As.

Save As dialog appears if you right click a link and Save Target As.

Open dialog appears if you click File and then Open.

But, the scripts for whatever PowerSchool web page are going to control any
actions from any links or buttons or whatever on PowerSchool web pages. I
mean that the programing of the PowerSchool web pages controls what happens.

Disable Active Scripting in Internet Explorer and try to access any of the
PowerSchool web pages, nothing will probably work. I am not suggesting that
you actually Disable Active Scripting, I am just pointing out that scripting
probably plays a big part on how PowerSchool's stuff works.

A screen shot will do me no good.

I would ask the PowerSchool people.

PowerSchool has:
Toll-free phone support
Email-support
Expansive searchable online knowledgebase

PowerSchool - SIS Customer Support.

I forgot to add that your problem could be caused by many things. A Windows
security setting or a setting in Internet Options, for example.

Your best bet would be PowerSchool support. They may even have run across
your very same problem before. ;-)
