Changes I make to my folder toolbar view (i.e. display address bar) are reset to the default view at startup. How can I save these settings in XP-Home edition. My computer is a new HP Pavillion, and the default view includes an "HP View" on the toolbar. I am beginning to suspect that there is an HP startup utility that is causing the problem.

Hi Dave,

See if this helps:

Save Settings on Exit (Line 54)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Thanks for the response, but Save Settings didn't help.

Using the Selective Startup option in the MSConfig tool, I think I have isolated the problem to the Startup Item "AUTOKIT". This item refers to the command "c:\hp\bin\AUTOKIT.EXE" and the location "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run".

Does anyone know what this is, or what it does? Can it be removed safely, so that I can return the system to a normal startup mode? If so how?

Never heard of it. Neither has HP. Good luck!

Yes. AUTOKIT seems to be the culprit [Internet Explorer Toolbar settings are not saved too].

Pls check this thread:

Disabling Autokit has no side-effects as far as i've seen in IE Newsgroups.
