I know how to save the desktop but not in order of appearance so i can paste
it onto new computer and have all icons appear in same order.

is this possible?

will FAST save my desktop icons in the same order as i have them now.....
Reading about "FAST", it seems like just another way to save the desktop but
there are no "settings" for desktop so once again.....
If i go to my c drive/ documents and settings/ and click on "desktop" that
saves everything on desktop but ONLY in alphabetical order (auto
arrange)....i want to be able to save in the order i have everything now.....

Will FAST be able to save in same order as i have it or will it also auto
arrangge. How is it different than just saving the destop to an external
portable mini drive and then paste to new computer?

All of the profile settings are stored in the Hkey_Current_User hive of the
Registry. FAST saves and restores this. When Windows reports "restoring your
settings" during logon, this is what loads.

i'm not understanding ...too technical for me....
does this mean if i use FAST to save my desktop to my external mini portable
hardrive, when i paste it into my new laptop it will be in same order as what
i have now or will it auto arrange like saving the way i do now does?

can anybody else answer my simple question.......Mr. Ferguson is too type A
for me.

What Mr. Ferguson told you is that your cannot just copy and paste the layout of your desktop.
The layout is stored in a section of the file call the "registry". You need a program that saves
this registry section and then re-installs it.
However, there is a risk in re-installing a registry setting into a new computer that has it's own
registry settings.
I think you will just have to copy the short cut icon to your new computer and then arrange them as
you want.
Judging from your responses, you don't have the technical ability to fool around in the registry.

WOW..OMG...there is somebody that can explain accurately....yes i get it but
my next question would be:

Is XP registry compatible or same as Vista registry settings. should i use
the program he had suggested...
Jeff can you ansswer this one????

I believe Vista has a "Files And System Transfer" (FAST) wizard that would personalize your Vista
Machine like you have on the old machine. Take a look at HELP and Support on your new Vista
computer. You will most likely need a special cable to connect the two computers. I would not
recommend just copying the XP registry section and pasting it into a Vista registry.
