When I save a Word doc attachment from Outlook into a
folder where I normally save all of my documents, I canno
find it or view it unless I do a "search" and it says it
is in that folder. Would the number of files I have saved
in that folder (#1146) have anything to do with this?

Does this only happen to items with a .doc file extension I wonder?
What version of Office/OS are you using?

Well, I think I would have a hard time finding one file out of a list of
1146 ;)

Suggestion: Have you tried using Details view and then hitting the Date
column to sort from newest to oldest (or clicking again to get oldest to
newest)? That would put the just saved file towards the top of the list (or
bottom, depending on how you sorted). Or make a note of the name when
saving the file. Then open the folder and click the Name column (again in
Details view) to sort the files alphabetically.

Another suggestion: May want to start adding some subfolders to this main
folder that you're saving to. Sort the files that already stored there into
the subfolders. When you get a new file save it in the main folder. When
you're ready to read the file, open Explorer to your main folder. You'll
see all of your subfolders and the new file. It will be a lot easier to
find it. After reading the document, move it to the appropriate subfolder.

I practice what Sharon "preaches". Also consider downloading/saving to a
wholly unrelated folder. I believe My Documents has a "My Received Files"
folder; if not, you can create one with such name.

I van't tried a different file from another application.
I am running Windows XP and Office 2003.

The files are already sorted in alphabetical order, but
it does not show in the list. The odd thing is, the file
name starts with a number. If I rename the file by simply
adding a letter to the front of it, then it shows up.

I agree,
I go a step further, I download to a second disk, to a folder called
download. After I run virus scan and quality check the file then I
move it to another folder usually with new in the folder name.

I backup the new folders more often than the system..

I try to keep everything new off the C drive.

When you save a new file to a folder, XP will initially add it to the
*bottom* of the list. The next time you open the folder, it will list in
its proper position.

You can force the sort without closing/opening Explorer by clicking on one
of the column headers (as previously described) or right click and use the
Arrange By... menu options.
