Hi- When I'm saving anything & am asked to save as what kind of file how do
I know how to answer? For example, I just scanned a document & it wanted to
know the file type. I typed in 1.txt & it worked & went to wordpad. But I
was just lucky. Usually, I have no clue & just cancel the whole darn thing.
How do I know?
As Always-Thanks, Alan

Save As, is usually asking for a file name, the file type should be
automatically entered, depending on the app you are using

Hi DL, Thanks for your try. I should not have asked the question because I'm
too confused to supply proper info. But I will say that I send the scanned
doc to worpad, which used to happen auto, & wordpad wants me to open it.
Bottom box when I try to open it says rich text format rtf. Top box is open
& wants a file name-usually I guess & am told it's an invalid name. How do I
know what file name to use? It's ok if you can't answer-I NEED to read the
manual!

Save As gives you the opportunity to give the file a name and save it to
somewhere other than the default location. Unless you have a specific
reason to change the file type, just leave it at the default. For
instance, if I were creating a Word document in Office 2003 but I knew
for certain it was going to a friend running Office 2000, I might save
it in an earlier Word format. But for the most part, you'll just leave
the file type alone.

The Save as dialog normally lets you specify three things: the file name,
the file type (extension), and where to save it.

To some extent, it depends on what app you're using , but as a general rule,
the app will choose a default file type and you shouldn't change it All you
may (or may not) want to change is the file name or location.

If the app leaves you on your own, and you have to choose a file type
yourself, you need to know something about what kind of file the app created
and how you're planning on using it. For example, if your app created a
picture, saving it as a txt file obviously won't work.

Try learning about file extensions.

To investigate how you are using hard disk space you need to make sure that
you can see all files. Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View,
Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and
folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files " is
unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should
also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types"
is not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is selected
and then select View, Choose Details and check before Name, Type, Total
Size, and Free Space.

Hope this helps.
