I've noticed that the "Save As" function now takes a heck of a long time to
display folders, drives etc... if I select the drop-down arrow from whatever
folder is displayed in the top line. Usually, this folder is way down the
folder structure and I want to come right up a few levels, the quickest way
used to be to select the drop-down at the top so I got a high-level view of
my drives, then I'd select my C: drive and navigate down to the desired
folder. However, to get to that high-level view now takes an absolute age
(30-40 secs) and similar time is taken to open each folder level below as I
navigate down. It took me all of 3 mins to save a Word doc in a folder
which was three levels down from C:

If you have an Real Time Protection security software on your system,
usually they put a shellhook into the Open/Save/Save As dialog window, in
order to trap and check what you are accessing or saving.

Do you have anything like that on your system? Norton, McAfee, CA,
ZoneAlarm?

Customize the Places bar. Then you don't have to screw around with the Look
in or Save in box drop down list.

You can use TweakUI, Edit the registry or if XP Pro, use System Policy
Editor.
