Save as .avi not dv-avi

All the posts about avi files seem to relate to the dv-avi for use with
camcorders. I just want to save my movie as an .avi file for storage on my
CPU (without it being 40G). Is this possible? I have other feature length
movies which are at most 1.5G and yet when I tried to join two 714M clips it
was going to be nearly 40G to save as a dv-avi. Should I be using a different
program if all I'm doing is joining seperated movie clips into a single file?

Thanks. That's kind of what I suspected. Unfortunately I don't have a
program, or am even aware of one, that would allow me to do this. Any
suggestions on what I could use for this purpose?

I don't have any references in my notes... one complexity would be needing
two identical source files to combine, in terms of codecs, VBR versus CBR,
video sizes, etc... you can't just combine two files that differ in
settings.

Not knowing the kinds of files you want to combine, all I can do is refer
you to DVDRHelp.com, maybe you can find a utility there.

Maybe the .avi joiner at the following link
would be worth a try:

If you try it, let us know the result.

If you like the AVI joiner your problem is solved.
Otherwise what is the reason you don't want to simply save as a High Quality
NTSC (WMV) file?
That would still be high quality playback on the computer and they take up
far less HDD space.

Thanks for all the help everybody. I really appreciate it! The AVI joiner
worked for a bunch of my files, but not all of them. Oh well, can't get
everything for free I guess :)

No real reason to make it as an avi instead of a wmv except for the fact
that I'm a little anal retentive and all the rest of my movie files are avi
and a wmv just wouldn't match ;)

Well stop being so anal retentive then. :-)

For the AVI files that AVI joiner didn't work for try using Movie Maker to
create a WMV file just to see what happens. If AVI Joiner didn't work I
suspect either the files are corrupt or damaged in some way or you have a
codec problem.

I did try actually. It started ok but the audio went out of sync towards the
end. Although I think this may have something to do with the fact that I
didn't get a chance to actually save and shut down WMM properly. I set the
movie to process and went to bed. However, I forgot to disable a small
utility I have which automatically restarts my system every morning at 5am
just to keep everything running smoothly since I leave it on all the time.

The files I have do play fine in WMP so I would assume the codecs are OK.
I'll let you know what happens on the 2nd attempt.
