Well, just to see what the NG Street Fights are about...

1. Downloaded 8.04 x64 version from Argonne Labs... 8 minutes
2. Burned ISO to DVD
3. Booted from DVD
4. No native support for Dual Monitor
5. Butt Ugly!
6. TCP Stack found, Internet OK
7. Firefox works

OK it works....

However, clearly little more than a curiosity for me at this point.

To be fair I will probably play with and explore it in my spare time.

For now back to get some work done with the Vista OS and my Applications.

Regards,
Chris S.

You will find as most users find that Ubuntu/Linux is just a toy for the
home user. Better off spending your time working with Vista and your
applications and don't waste any more with Ubuntu.

Point taken, Bill

My curiosity comes from haven sold Desktop UNIX back in the late 70s.
(On the Motorola 68xx platform.) Linus Torvalds seems to have done little
but port it to the x86 platform. Wrapping a GUI around it reminds me
of Windows over DOS, with DOS having descended from UNIX/CP/M.

Remembering the "Bourne Shell", the "Berkley Shell" and countless others,
the plethora of "Distros" suggests that nothing much has changed with our
old Dowager, UNIX.

Chris S.

Why not try benchmarking some large file copies. Like DVD-ISO images and
the like. Copy in say using Secure shell using the same server as the
source, once into Ubuntu and once into Vista. Then copy the file disk to
disk. Then examine the times it takes.

Why Use A Piece Of Junk Software Like Ubuntu? Ubuntu Is For Retards And If
You Use Ubuntu Then You Are A Retard. Just FYI

As a satisfied Vista user myself, I can only say... it's these types of
posts that just add to the adversarial tone in this particular NG. So...
someone likes Ubuntu and wants to use it... so what? Their choice.

I've tried 3 out of the last four Ubuntu releases and... not a fan. And
I'm not going to cast aspersions of those that like it and want to use
it. (Unless, of course, they spew constant off topic Ubuntu fan-boi
drivel here.)

I've read good things about 8.04... but don't have my hopes up that it
will even come close to replacing Vista for me.

Anyone who has given linux a test ride knows exactly what they're
missing...nothing...absolutely nothing.
