SATA setup(F6) after system install. Can it be done w/o new install?

I have a XP Pro system installed (video editing) on a Asus P4PE mobo with great success.

I then wanted to install the on-board SATA raid(0) since the price of the drives has finally come down to a reasonalbe level

I enabled SATA in the bios and then let the Promise bios utility initalize the raid automatily. I then booted and went to Drive Management and setup/formated the RAID

On rebooting XP did not see the raid anymore. I have tried just about everything(turn off in bios/disconnect the drives and start all over> no Promise bios start up utility) except flashing the bios on the mobo( I was in the middle of a project and did not wnat to take the chance)

I also searched this forum and only found the "put drivers on a floppy and reboot with the XP disk in the CD drive and F6 then

Is this the soln to my problem? or does anyone have another suggestion

It's certainly worth trying - I had a problem with XP
setup not detecting SATA drives at all until I used a
floppy with the drivers during setup. It was an Asus A7N8X
mobo, so the drivers should be the same (I assume they use
the same RAID controller). Is windows installed on another
drive, or is it just the two SATAs? If you've got one
drive in there already, you could use the drivers on the
CD that came with the mobo originally.

Hope this helps,

Alun

thanks for the response

I have 3 IDE drives, one with the system (C;Drive) already running

I am trying to get the SATA raid0 setup. Not with the op system on it, just as a video storage raid

As I said before, I installed and formated the SATA, but after rebooting, it was gone. Nothing I could do would see the 2 SATA drives on the onborad Promise controler

I will try the XP cd and the floppy this week to see if I can install the raid via XP w/o reinstalling the op system

Your Raid bios screen should become available during/just after post but
before the operating system takes control. If you are not getting the DOS
RAID bios screen then it is not an XP issue but rather a hardware issue.

The F6 option is only used for installing the OS on a new drive which does
not have the raid controller SW. If it is just an extra drive without OS
the F6 option would not come into play.

You might try just running your SATA drives one at a time to see if one has
died on you. Not the best of news but could cause the problems you are
talking about. Also if available try different data cables as they have
also been know to be flakey.

FWIW,
Good Luck, Len

Thanks len

Never thought of the drive dieing

The bios start up menu for the SATA did come up the first time, but not after I rebooted

I will check cables(I have 2 sets) and try one drive at a time

Report back when I test that out
