I'm considering to build a RAID 5, based on a regular desktop motherboard
(SK939) with 4 SATA-II HD's + 1 for spare, to be used as a file server.
I would appreciate you suggestions to identify a PCI SATA RAID controller.
I'm not considering soft RAID's (PCI boards without XOR engine) nor software
RAID version from Windows XP server.

Thanks for the help.

Take a look at www.promise.com they make several RAID solutions for
SATA.

If it is only going to be a file server, why use a PC at all?. Look at the
Buffalo Terastation. Not SATA, but PATA, however provides a clean small
file server solution, for less money than it is really possible to build
such a unit.

Best Wishes

You can get prices and a very few review comments about
Areca here:

A lot of RAID users live here. forums.2cpu.com is a
good place to get leads on various storage solutions.

Now, this is how to build a storage device :-)
I'd probably put more air space between drives.

Rebuilding can also be an issue, and not all reviews will
test for that issue:

Have fun,
