Hello all,

I have a7nx8 delux for about a month. I have SATA raid on it, at first
it was very fast (feeling and sisoftware sandra), but latly I just
started to feel it much slower, and sisoftware sandra also says that it
is much slower (about twice).

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Is it fragmented? Have you installed an operating system on the RAID disk?
Did you change anything with your hardware between then and know?

Yes it is defragmented, and yes it has Win2K installed on it, no I did
not make any changes sence and page file is on separate disk.

Assuming you haven't somehow mixed software RAID
and hardware RAID, and have run diagnostic checks on all hardware,
Microsoft says not to put a system or boot partition on
a striped volume with Win 2K; so I would recommend erasing the drives
and installing the system and boot files on a non-RAID disc. Also, make
sure that you haven't somehow set the non-RAID disc to mirror the RAID
array in any way (obvious, and shouldn't be possible in Win2K, but I can't
think of anything else).

is this the same for winXP HE??

i`m running winXP on RAID0 array.

Thanks interesting. Can you point me to the Microsoft refference?

I don't see how Windows would know about hardware RAID0. It sees it as
single drive.

I'm not sure. I think that if you setup the array with the RAID utility
that came
with your hardware, then you should be ok. However, you may have reduced
performance - I just read this about RAID, which I'll quote from Promise in
Maximum PC:

"1. When using ATA drives, configure the drives as Master drives, with one
drive per channel. Using Slave drives will increase overhead, reducing
performance.

2. Use the RAID 0 array as a data drive and not as the boot drive. When
the operating system and the page file reside on the boot drive, it creates
overhead that can diminish the performance of applications like Adobe's
Photo shop and Premiere.

3. Using the page file on RAID 0: If you are using multiple RAID 0
arrays - either four drives in Master/Slave (ATA) or four drives as Master
on a SATA RAID controller, we recommend the following:
a. Boot to onboard IDE
b. Use array 1 for page file (experienced users only)
c. Use array 2 for the data drive, applications, games, and more.

4. When using Windows XP, turn off the system Restore on the RAID 0 array.
System Restore monitors the disk (array), reducing performance.

5. Use single partitions. Using multiple partitions reduces application
performance because you are running I/O to more than one partition on the
same disk (array). If you use multiple partitions, do not move the page
file to any of the "partitions" on the array where your applications or
games are running - this will prevent you from getting optimal performance"

Hope this helps, though, I'm still a little unclear on how to optimize the
locations of my page file(s), OS, and boot data without causing drastic
problems.

Cheers,

Dave

Thanks,

I don't think it could know about hardware RAID either, but I guess there is
an alternate
way to configure raid using the software. The reference is at:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303184&Product=win2000

I think it has to do with software controlled RAID 0 arrays, though I may be
wrong because
I don't see anything on the subject of RAID 0 under WinXP, which might
indicate that Win2K
has special RAID limitations.

Yes, and there is no way I would trust M$ to do RAID0, thats why i have
hardware raid, and my question was about hardware raid (a7nx8 has SATA
hardware raid support).

So anyone, any ideas about hardware raid?

Thanks
