I have a system with a p4pe mb with a single sata drive. At first I
couldn't boot off this drive because the system did not recognize it as
a boot device.
i.e. I first tried to install linux. The install went without a hitch
but when I rebooted the system I got a message that there was no system
disk. I then thought about trying WinXP to see if it was a linux issue.
XP wouldn't even allow the install. It gave a message that a boot
device could not be found.
I tried looking around the bios settings looking for a combination that
would allow for booting off the sata. I did try the scsi option that I
saw suggested in another thread. I also saw a thread that suggested
using the Promise controller. I set up the sata drive as a stripe drive
and the system now boots fine as a linux box.
I have zero understanding of raid controllers, I thought a stripe was a
type of bass. So, since it is set up as a stripe will this effect the
performance of the drive? If I end up moving this drive over to another
machine at a later time as a secondary drive will the data be
accessable, minus the boot partition issue.
By the way the drive is a Western Digital Caviar SE WD800JD 80GB 7200
RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive.
Thanks for your help
