After owning a P4S8X for over a year I finally decided to upgrade my hard
drive. I got a WD 120GB Serial ATA drive. My intent was that this would be
my primary and probably only drive. After trying to install it I am coming
to the conclusion that on this mb at least, SATA can only be used as a
secondary in a RAID array. I can find nothing in the manual to tell me how
to set it up otherwise. I have turned on the Promise controller in the bios
but it does not recognize the drive.
Can anyone confirm that I can't use a SATA drive as the only drive in the
P4S8X?

Thank you.

Did you update to bios v. 1005final? Download the latest Promise drivers
from Asus? Also, keep your old hd and use it for windows, run the sata
drive as storage, with the old hd does windows not the bios recognize the
sata drive? *i had 120gig + 30gig hds, after 1yr the drive got some bad hd
sectors that even writing 0,1's dont fix, lost everything, now i have XP on
a 30gig (plain ata/100) hd*
