I have win XP installed on IDE as primary master and everything runs without
any problem.
when I add SATA it shows up ( during start up - black screen ) as primary
master (?!)
and before the win starts it always runs disk check for SATA - results : no
problems.
I am able to access all data I have on SATA.
Question: what causes the problem during start up ? should I look into BIOS
or some special way to connect it?
any suggestions?
thanx

You need to set in the BIOS youre IDE hd as 1st boot priority or
similiar,also
set the BIOS for running SATA & IDE together (advanced chipset).Read the
owners manual...For windows always checking a hd on start up,read kb831426

You will need to change the BIOS settings for boot devices.

The exact labling varies by motherboard, but on my ASUS P4S8X the current
categories for boot order are:

1. ATAPI-CDROM [DVD drive]
2. Removebale Device [floppy]
3. IDE hard drive [none]
4. Other boot device [SCSI/on-board ATA]

Since I want SATA before IDE, I have set the IDE to "none". I could have
also demoted it to 4th choice.

In you case, you want to boot from IDE not from SATA, so you would set that
to the name/description of your IDE device. When I say "set", I mean use
the menu options to select the IDE device. If the name is already set, and
that is likely, then just be sure that the IDE device appears above the SATA
device in the boot order.

Note that many BIOS setup contain built-in help information on the same
screen, so read the whole screen.

Of course, reading the motherboard manual might also help.

I've checked my BIOS:
primary IDE - detected
sec IDE - not detected
slaves detected (DVD ROMs)
boot priority: floppy, DVD, IDE
hard drives: 1st IDE, 2nd SATA
under advanced Chipset - I have north and southbridge configuration - did
not see anything re. drives, SATA etc
scheduled tasks - no disk check scheduled

any other suggestions? in a mean time I will look for the manual
I did not mention it before: in the past I had to glue plastic part of
connector on a SATA side -can it cause instability or something ? but again
I have no problem reading data from SATA...........

my SATA shows in My Computer but in properties it says: SCSI disk device ?!?
it probably causes confusion in win xp
I do not have SCSI on my PC
how do I fix it?

Lech:
There's nothing to fix. The system will usually reference a SATA HDD as a
SCSI device. Sometimes even an IDE-ATA device as if it were a PATA HDD. It's
nothing to be concerned about and won't cause any confusion with your OS.
