Hello, I just built a new PC for a technophobe friend, and I notice that the
single hdd in the system - SATA - is showing on the Safely Remove Hardware
list. This will be very problematic since my friend will be plugging USB
devices into this computer, especially his usb pen drive, and I'm afraid he's
going to confuse his SATA hdd with his pen drive or other device and
accidentally deactivate the hdd. I don't know what this does to the OS, and
I'm not about to experiment, but is there any way to prevent the SATA hdd
from appearing in the Safely Remove Hardware list? I've searched for such an
option, but can't find one.

Thanks,
Byron Gibson

System Specs:
Windows XP SP2 OEM
Nvidia Nforce 3 Ultra (Shuttle XPC SN95G5)
Maxtor Ultra Series 7200RPM 80GB SATA Model L01M080

I am also having similar problems. I wish I could help, but all I can tell is
it seems to occur with Maxtor SATA drives on NForce3 Chipsets. Could it be
the motherboard's chipset reporting it incorrectly or the driver for the
Maxtor hard drive?

I was hoping somebody from Microsoft would find this and respond, but alas.
In in the meantime I guess we'll have to contact Maxtor and Nvidia's customer
support and see what they can make of it. If I get an answer, I'll post it
back here.

Have either of you found a reason why these drives are showing in the
'safely remove hardware'?

The problem isn't confined just to Maxtor.

DFI Lanparty (NF3)
Samsung 160 GB SATA
A64 3400
Win XP home

My SATA shows up in the safely remove hardware dialogue too.
