Hello, I am trying to solve a hdd problem. The drive in question is a
Western Digital Caviar SE, serial ATA. Model # wd2000js-22mhbo.
Everything was ok up to about a week ago, now the drive seems to just
trip over and over, like a slow repeated stumble. I cant start up in
safe mode to check for a virus , as the pc will attempt to start in
safe mode, it reboots and start the process again. The c: drive is not
recognized in My computer, so I am unable to run a check disk. Could
the drive be damaged due to a virus or is it just at the end of its
service? I dont know and I could use some help from someone with more
insight on these matters. Please and thanks for your time and
patience.

-----------

Unplug the power cable from the rear of the computer case.

Remove the case cover. Unplug and replug securely all of the
cables/connectors that you can reach. Replace the case cover. Plug in the
power cord. Restart the computer.

There is a 50/50 chance that you have solved the problem. That's the best
that I can offer. It has worked for me numerous times over the years. Good
luck.

As per previous post - check and reconnect to make sure that the SATA
cable(s) are connected firmly to the MB and drive(s). This happened
to me few times when SATA cable came loose a little and the drive was
unresponsive and/or unrecognized in Windows. Why cann't they design
some kind of lock or latch mechanism at both end of the cable so it
won't came loose when moving the pc around.

There are cables like that available now and they are becoming more
common. This is just one example of a plethora that are available in
different colors, lengths, etc.

This is just one of 26 pages of SATA cables, many with metal latches:

One reason might be because not everyone is well coordinated.
Someone might accidentally catch hold of a cable and do some serious
wreckage if the cable doesn't easily come loose. I always check and
doublecheck the cables.

Oop !!! Didn't realize they have those now a day - gotta get me
couple of those when the price is lower when they have more
selection. But for $10.49 CAN a piece, it's kind of expensive for a
SATA cable compared to Neweggs (many are under $3 US). I fixed the
loose sata cable issue while back by using a glue gun and put a drop
of glue in the middle of the join; and it is easy to remove by peeling
off the dry glue.

Problem solved. It seems that the person that I was trying to help had
not given me the whole truth as to what was going on with the drive in
question. They were infected with a virus and thought in order to
remove it they should run the recovery disk supplied with the pc .
After they had started the recovery, they changed the minds and
stopped the task. Now that the recovery had only written half of the
files needed, Windows more or less had hit a wall, so to speak. After
this little bit of info. was supplied, the task was completed and the
drive is running fine, and is once again recognized in My computer. I
am glad that the pc is running well again for them, I only wished that
they had gived me all of the details up front. I hope that I have not
wasted anyones time on this one, and I apologize if I have. Thanks
again for your positive inputs.

Newegg.ca is now shipping to Canada. The prices are fine though they may
nail you on shipping.

Doesn't UPS apply a brokerage charge ? I seem to remember them
stinging me, and you pay shipping on one side of the border, and
then have to pay their brokerage fee on the other side. Some
of the other shippers were doing the brokerage for free.
(But that may have changed.) As a result, UPS is kinda a
deal breaker for me.

If Newegg wanted to crush the competition, they'd set up a
warehouse on this side of the border, and do it right. As
a customer, I don't want to be reminded about border issues
when I buy stuff. NCIX offers more than one shipping option,
which I like. When I buy there, I don't always use the
cheapest option.
