i recently bought a sata hard drive and want to use it as my main drive but
it won't boot properly if it is the only drive how can i fix this

Ask tech support folks at the motherboard manufacturer's web site and/or
forum. If the SATA drive is connected to a PCI card then ask that
manufacturer.

You need to look in your Mobo manual and the Bios for settings......some of
the mobo require that you install SATA drivers during the XP installation
process. Some Mobo require you to enable SATA RAID in order to use the SATA
ports even though you might not use RAID.
There seems to be no set standard as each Mobo Manufact. has their own way.
If still lost please post your specific motherboard model

There are settings in the BIOS. Usually under peripherals. The
under boot order. Then under drive configuration. You have not
given enough information to give an accurate solution.
