hi all

how much faster are sata hard drives than ide ones,
1. has anyone seen any test results
2. are they reliable?
3. do they heat up as much as ide ??
4. any other comments

It depends on the specific models. Some of the SATA drives are the same as
the EIDE ones from the same manufacturer except for the interface. The
newest, fastest drives are coming out in SATA but just being SATA isn't
enough to make a performance difference in itself.

There are very fast SATA drives. Just being SATA is no guarantee of high
speed.

I read this on SATA Drives, that there are not much faster than ATA 133, but
that they are less CPU intensive than the ATA drives.....

The thruput from any drive is determined by how many magnetic bits
pass the head. The packing of bit/inch has about reached a peak. The
only to way get more past the head is increased RPM for the drive. A few
drives are offering 10,000 RPM, but most are just SATA electronics
applied to the old EIDE drive.

THe SATA interface is at 150MB, but no drive yet acheives that rate.
2. are they reliable?
Should be no different than older EIDE drives.
3. do they heat up as much as ide ??
With the same mechanical systems, the heat is produced mainly by
motor drive windings and bearing friction. No reason to expect any
thing different from SATA drives.

ATA133 is mostly a marketing hype. Most drives can not exceed
the ATA100 spec.

Having a single fewer conductor cable is a advantage. In addition
there is no need for master/slave drive designations.

SATA is the wave of the future, but at present it doesn't offer
any great speed advantages.

The CPU usage is not a function of the drive or SATA, but how good the
controllers are. They are, overall, about the same for controllers from the
same manufacturers whether SATA or not.

The Western Digital Raptor comes with a 5-year warranty.

10,000 RPM...8 meg cache.

If you noticed a difference when going from a 5400 rpm drive to a 7200
rpm, you'll notice a difference when going to the Raptor.

The confidence warranty alone is worth the change.

Yup yup, most definitely.

Agreed, that is the factor which sold me on this drive, and I intend on
upgrading a few other systems as their motherboards are replaced to
support SATA.
