Put a new system together but having never used a SATA drive before.
When I tried to install WinXP I get the message

XP setup did not find any hard disk drives installed ???
At bootup the drive is detected ??
I've formatted it, is it a BIOS problem ??

the system
Pentium 4 2.8Ghz
Gigabyte GA-8S655FX(-L) motherboard
256mb 400mhz DDR RAM dual channel
120gig Western Digital WD1200JD SATA hard drive

I really need HELP

I have Asus A7N8X and when installing WinXP from scratch had to
install the SATA drivers FIRST. I have no IDE hdd, just the SATA hdd.

When WinXP starts the install, (from CD) it should ask if you need to
install any 3rd-party drivers first. There was an option to hit F5 (I
think) to let you install these items.

It was a while back, but I recall having to copy the drivers from the
Asus CD to diskette. Even though I was not using RAID, and the drivers
are described as RAID drivers, and having been told by the store that
I didn't need to install the drivers 1st, they were indeed needed.

After that, all went like a charm.

First, make sure the SATA controller is enabled in your bios and set to
"Manual," not "Auto," if there is such an option. Have the SATA XP drivers
ready on a floppy, and when XP's install shows an option to hit <f6> to
install SCSI or other drivers, do so and point to the floppy when prompted.
Go to the Gigabyte site first and download the most current drivers
available for your mobo, not those shipped with it.
