Matt

I recently upgraded my computer and had the option of
going with teh faster SATA hard drives. I have an SATA
hard drive but thw Windows XP CD doesnt' recognise it and
it came with no disks. My motherboard can see it fine,
but when I boot up useing my old IDE HD the new SATA drive
doesn't show up in the windows explorer or anything. Does
anyone out there know how to load windows on a SATA hard
drive?

You'd be better off asking the folks that made your motherboard. This

Gee, I would have interpreted the newsgroup heading to mean, Help with ANY
hardware connected that utilizes Windows XP as an OS?.....

Hi Matt

Ignore the nay-sayers... it's an issue that crops up from time to time on
this newsgroup and usually gets a much more helpful response than you've had
so far.

You don't give any details of your hardware so this will have to be a
general guide.

In order to install XP you'll need to follow a particular method to install
the SATA drivers.

You'll need to have the SATA drivers available on a floppy disk ready for
the install process - if your mainboard manufacturer has not supplied a
floppy disk with the drivers you'll find them on your mainboard CD or
manufacturers website.

Make sure that, if you need to copy onto a floppy disk, you transfer all the
files from the SATA driver folder or from the download from your mainboard
manufacturers website - special attention needed to ensure you include all
necessary files.

Check your mainboard manual for the appropriate BIOS settings for booting
from SATA.

As the XP set-up begins you will be prompted to 'Press F6 to specify
third-party RAID or SCSI drivers' - at this point you should press F6 and,
when asked, insert the floppy disk with the relevant drivers. Select the
appropriate driver when asked and continue with the setup. There may be
some delays during this process and the set-up may appear to be continuing
without recognising the key-press - so don't panic.

When successful you'll be able to select the HD to install on. If you are
not given the HD you have not completed the procedure correctly. Check you
are using the correct drivers, have any relevant BIOS updates for your
mainboard, and try again.

Hope that helps

The motherboard should have come with a floppy disk containing SATA drivers,
or the drivers should be on the installation CD that came with the
motherboard.

If you are going to do a fresh install of XP onto the SATA drive, you will
need to extract the drivers from the CD to a floppy (if they came on a
floppy, skip this step). When you install Windows, at the beginning of the
file loading process, it will tell you press F6 to load SCSI or third party
drivers- do this, then follow the prompts of the install. Your motherboard
should have complete installation instructions with it. If not, go to their
website.

I would suggest that you disconnect the IDE drive that already has an OS on
it prior to installing the OS on the SATA drive.

If you don't know what the newsgroup is for "Jerry", you'd be better off not
posting.

Make sure your bios settings are right, SATA+IDE. you may
also have to sacrafice the primary IDE channel to use the
SATA1 channel. Thats how mine works. XP Pro installed with
no issues or extra drivers in this arrangement. If you
have a raid board, you can use the extra channels for
drives if you dont use them for raid. XP will see these
channels and allow you to use them. Just make sure the
drivers are installed. Good luck.
