Currently downloading RC1 (100-200 KB/sec - ~6 hours left). Does Vista
now have common SATA drivers baked in or do I still need my driver CD?

It has a lot of SATA drivers built in now. However it is by no means all
SATA controllers.

On two of my machines, only the Silicon Image controller (which is a
secondary controller) doesn't have drivers, both the VIA onchip (on the same
board) and the nVidia on my other machine do.

Thanks Paul! I think mine is VIA so I'm probably ok.

Post back and let me know how it went. I had some performance issues with
my VIA controller a VT8237, had to use the XP drivers to get performance
back. 8-)

Check! x64 installed fine but sound stuttered terribly. downloaded and
installed x32 (on different drive) thinking that might be the problem.
nope. Found a note somewhere online about using OEM sata drivers so
installed the drivers that came with my board (MSI). No sound stuttering or
mouse skipping. Seems the SATA drivers in RC1 are crap.

Agree. Thanks for this post, I was struggling with poor performance and
audio/video choppiness .. Loading older VIA SATA drivers cleared up the sound
studdering issue. I saw lots of people with this problem I hope they find
this post as well.

I did the same thing, went from 64 to 32 bit install and am wondering if I
should spend the time loading the 64bit version again.
