Hey all.
I'm having trouble installing a SATA drive. I just got a Seagate 120GB
Barracuda. I'm only using it for storage so I won't need to boot off it
and I guess it shouldn't be configured in RAID. The problem I'm having
is that the drive will show up during the boot sequence during the RAID
check but it won't show in Windows 2k. When I go into device manager I
see there's a yellow marker next to "Other Devices" which has "RAID
Controller" in it's directory marked yellow as well. I downloaded the
Silicone drivers off the ASUS site and ran the setup program, rebooted,
but the yellow marker is still there. I've read the Seagate help and it
said to enable SATA in my bios. I've looked under every menu but cannot
find a designated SATA menu in the bios. I was thinking about flashing
my bios to a new version but decided to come here as a last resort
before I do anything dramatic. Just for reference, here are the
relevant specs:

Motherboard: Asus A78NX Deluxe rev. 2
Bios: rev 1003

Any help?

possibly a BIOS update may assist you since that is an older BIOS
revision...I had 1006 and all I did was set the SATA jumper to on and booted
the system...then I put a floppy in with the drivers and let XP search for
them...was easy. If the drive is seen then SATA controller is enabled
(obviously)...just uninstall the RAID controller...reboot and have a disc
with the drivers on it. Let XP do it's own thing to install them. I believe
the current BIOS revision is 1008...and they were many fixes for the
Silicone Image Sata controller in all the newer revisions.

I'm assuming your ASUS motherboard is the A7N8X-E Deluxe model.

Try this...

1. Insert your ASUS installation CD.

2. Device Manager > RAID Controller - Right-click and select Update Driver

3. Use the Hardware Update Wizard to "Install from ... specific location
...."

4. Browse to CD - Drivers\SATA and click OK. Click Next on following screen.

5. XP (we're assuming XP is your OS, right?) will find the driver - Sil 3112
SAGTARaid Controller. Click Finish.

6. The driver will be listed in the (newly created) "SCSI and RAID
controllers" section of DM.

thanks for the replies. Just wanted to mention that my OS is Windows
2000. Also, I don't have the cd, but I figured I could use the drivers
off the Asus site dino linked. I won't be able to try it out until
later tonight but I will continue to keep you guys updated.

there are 3 models of A7N8X-Deluxe..so make sure of your model..you
specified 2.0 which is one...there are 1.0 and also Deluxe -E...if you go to
do a BIOS update be sure of the stampings on the motherboard between the 2nd
and 3rd PCI slots.A wrong BIOS flash would be very fatal.

Update:

Actually got it to work! The problem was my RAID Controller driver.
Apparently running the setup.exe in the driver zip file from Asus
installs the SATALink program and not the actual drivers themselves. I
had to manually install the drivers in the zip file which cured the
yellow marker I described in my previous post. Reboot, disk manager and
there it was, unallocated and ready to format. No need to flash and
upgrade bios, thankfully. Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.

you may want to read the BIOS updates however..I had more effiency with my
drives with the later BIOS's..they update the SATA ROM.the choice is
utimately yours.
