We don't know what YOU are using or doing to "clone" the hard drive.
SATA drives cannot be configured as master or slave; i.e., each SATA
drive gets its own channel (so there is no master/slave relationship
since there are not 2 drives trying to share the same channel). So
whatever "it" is that tells you to configure the SATA drive as slave is
wrong, or you are not actually telling us what the UNNAMED program
really says.

Read the motherboard manual. Where the SATA HD connects on
the motherboard, if there is another SATA HD present, will
determine whether it is a "Master" or a "Slave". Maybe the
system bios will sort out it out but there are "unknowns"
here without additional information.

If I had my druthers and based on the information present
here, I would clone the hard drive in a different way by
going through a CDROM or DVD-ROM. Next, remove the old HD,
install the SATA HD and get it identified as the Boot Drive.
Finally, copy the image file to it. A repair install of XP
might still be necessary.

There is no Master/Slave relationship with sata drives, niether does it make
any difference which sata connectors are used - at least in the various
mobos I've used

Your cloning program is being stupid. It probably has no idea how to
cope with SATA.

A side issue is that XP will have issues booting even if the clone is
sucessful. (probably INACESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE BSOD) Xp doesn't like it
when you change the hard drive controllers. Unless this ist't the boot
partition you're cloning.

That is correct but newer motherboards come with 2 and even
4 SATA ports. One motherboard manual has gone so far as to
identify its SATA1/SATA2 ports as "Master" and SATA3/SATA4
as "Slave". In a non-RAID setup, the primary or boot HD is
supposed to be conneced to SATA1/SATA2. New convention to
help those moving to SATA as it gains popularity?

I have a board with 8 sata ports, two controlers, they are simply identified
as sata1 - 4 etc in manual and bios
You can set to boot from any
