Are there any known workarounds for requiring a floppy
drive to add non-standard drivers during XP install? I'd
hate to have to buy one just for this!

Thanks!

Bill

Hi Bill

There are no workarounds that I am aware of... unless you buy a mainboard
with the SATA controller fully integrated e.g. utilising Intel's ICH5 or
ICHR5 which can then use standard IDE drivers from the XP installation CD.

But a floppy drive isn't that expensive.

Thank you for the answer; sadly, it's the one I was
expecting!

It's not the cost of the drive that's the problem; it's
that a floppy is not part of the 'required hardware' for
XP, and this box hasn't got a space free for it, so I'll
have to balance the drive on top!

Hi Bill

Well, I didn't think the price would be a problem... but the resolution for
a completely floppy-free system is still to base it on a mainboard with a
fully integrated (sometimes referred to as 'native') SATA controller.

The floppy drive is not part of required hardware for XP, but it is for some
SATA drives.

But you can always remove the floppy drive from the system after
installation.

cheers

Many newer boards don't come with a floppy controller, Pete...although
I guess one could buy a controller card also.

All the more reason to choose an appropriate mainboard for the system as a
whole, Trent.

I have never heard of a MB without a floppy controller. There might
be a few out there but they would be few and far between. A floppy
drive is a $10.00 item and if a mfg makes 100,000 PC's without
a floppy they have made a million dollars.

There's easily a few hundred thousand out there...maybe even a few
million.

$5...or less.
and if a mfg makes 100,000 PC's without

There's actually more money to be made by INCLUDING a floppy...since
they then have a cost to add overhead and profit to.

No item included...no mark-up on that item.

Do you think all the on-board stuff is available to us now because the
manufacturers felt SORRY for us?! lol
