Okay, the setup currently is:
- Asus SK8V mobo w/ AMD 64 FX
- 2 SATA drives, RAID is supported but is not being used, they are just 2
separate drives
- 1 IDE drive, ribboned separately to the BLUE IDE port on the mobo
- 1 DVD drive, ribboned separately to the BLACK IDE port
A while ago I got incessant Delayed Write and $mft errors on one of the
SATA drives, and data was being lost. Western Digital replaced the drive,
but after about 2 days it started happening again. I've done a complete
wipe of the SATA drives and have one of them set as the boot drive, w/ Win
XP Pro. The IDE drive WAS the old XP Pro drive, but I'm not booting from
it, and plan to wipe it as soon as I get all the data off it.
So, while I'm getting all the updates and everything, I'm on the lookout for
more (or the same) problems. I've noticed 2 things that concern me:
- On the 2nd SATA drive there is a 590 Mb MSOCACHE folder, which from
newsgroup searches looks like it's files saved during the office update.
I'm worried about how this was put on the second, non-OS SATA drive; is it
normal for Windows to put files like this on drives other than the one w/
the OS and software on it?
- In the BIOS, after updated flash, the operating mode was on RAID. Now,
the company that built the PC for me had it on IDE mode, and told me this is
because I'm not using RAID, so I manually set it back to IDE operating mode.
Is this the correct setting to have, or is it causing the BIOS to reset the
Boot device priority to use the IDE drive (which it's done several times,
even after I change to be the SATA drive and save changes)?
- One thing I've wondered about is if the delayed write all started because
I have several Windows-related folders on other drives. For instance, in
backing up and cosolidating data, etc., I have sometimes copied the
Documents and Settings folders, and the Inetpub folders, to data drives that
aren't the boot drive. Is this OK, or does it cause problems?
Thanks for reading, and for any help and/or advice on this. If I should
post this in a different ng, please let me know.
