Does anyone know of a SATA controller
card with an external port that supports
hot swapping? So that if I plug in an external
drive it will be recognized without rebooting
the PC. I've searched on Goggle and found
some controller cards but the don't mention
anything about hot swapping. The manual for
the external case I have states that the SATA
port must support hot swapping if I want the
drive to be recognized when its plugged in
after the PC is booted. The case has
USB20/firewire/SATA ports, I'm using the
firewire port but was curios about the SATA
port. I tried it on the SATA port on my MB
but find that impractical.

From what I understand SATA 1.0 supports hot swap (hot plug) and the new
SATA 2.0 specs have made some improvements. I think the limitations can
be the motherboards chipset and the HDD itself (I don't believe all SATA
drives support hot swapping.) As far as cards, 'Promise' is a fairly
reliable manufacturer but check with their tech support to see about it.
