I have a laptop that is appaprently infected by Sasser or vairaint. I have
located
the updates / fixes but laptop keeps shutting down before I can complete
download.. Any suggestions appreciated....

Start > Run, and enter "shutdown -a"

Thanks v. much for yor repsonse. When I enter "shutdown-a" in
Start>Run>open Window I get a response saying that Windows cannot find the
file and Shutdown continues. Am I missing something ???

There needs to a space between "shutdown" and "-a".

Correct: shutdown -a Wrong: shutdown-a

You need to leave the space ( " " ) between "shutdown" and the
"-a"
