Sapphire X1950GT very loud fan

Hi

I just installed a new sapphire (last generation) X1950GT 256MB on a fresh
vista professional. I installed catalyst 7.8 and I was very surprised to see
that the fan speed was not controlled and decreased when not in full load.
So the fan is always at 100%. I don't use 3D games at all. Is this a known
issue or is there a way to change it ? I have a medium size tower (MB Asus
P5WDH + CPU intel 2160 core 2 duo).

Thanks

Sid

Could be any number of things, such as immaturity of the Vista driver, or
lack of PWM functionality in the card. Install Rivatuner here:
http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner (disable driver signature
checking beforehand) and see if you can at least manually set the fan speed.

The other alternative is to install an aftermarket cooler like the Arctic
Cooling Accelero X2, which remains quiet at 100% fan speed.

On both an X850 and a new X1950, the fan speed stayed pretty much
constant on my XP install - no sign of any temperature control at all!
The best way I have found to get around this and the many other
annoyances with ATI's cruddy CCC, is to install Ati tray tools. If you
right click on the tray icon and select hardware/overclocking/fan, you
can set a fixed speed or stepping for 3d/gaming purposes.
My HIS X1950 is now inaudible in desktop mode ;-)
