Hey all, I'm running Windows Vista Build 6000... my Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro
Atlantis video card driver will not load, the error info is below:

Description:
Windows was able to successfully install device driver software, but the
driver software encountered a problem when it tried to run. The problem code
is 43.

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: PnPDeviceProblemCode
Architecture: x86
Hardware Id: PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4150&SUBSYS_0200174B&REV_00
Setup class GUID: {4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
PnP problem code: 0000002B
Driver name: atikmdag.sys
Driver version: 7.1.1.537
Driver date: 12-05-2006
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

I've tried the windows driver, and the AMD driver.... both yeild the same
result (error 43). I tried installing and uninstalling the Catalyst Control
Center several times... sometimes just the driver without the CCC. I've
actually never been able to run the CCC, I click on it and it wont start up.
I've been working on this for two days straight now... there sure seems to be
a lot of problems with video cards and vista... argh! Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Ty

is the "windows driver" youre trying made for vista? im thinking probably
not.
that would be the problem if its not

The ATI drivers are still in beta.
If you want to try the Beta driver & CCC you will
have to uninstall all ATI drivers from you system
then install the beta driver.
Some functionality is disabled in the Beta drivers.

Best I can do, sorry.

Hey, thanks for the replies. Yes, I'm using the Vista drivers... downloaded
from the vista section of the ATI site.

To respond to Troy, the Windows driver I tried is one the Windows Vista
installed itself... so I'm assuming it's for Vista.

And to respond to LoneWolf... before I install the ATI beta driver, I
uninstall the current driver, but Vista seems to auto detect it and start
re-installing the windows driver almost right away. I have however been
successful in getting the beta driver to install, but it wont load properly
(gives the error 43)... and I've never gotten the CCC to run... I just click
on it and nothing happens.

So, I'm still searching for help.... hopefully I missing something.

Thanks guys!

When you removed the old driver, did you check the box
to REMOVE THE DRIVER FILES?

also, the ati driver from thier site made for rtm, is dated dec 15th. I have
had trouble for the past few video versions, where installing the updated
driver does not infact update the driver the system is using, but is just
copying over the files. Usually I will go to device manager, Hit properties
on my card, update driver, then manually point the focus to the directory of
the update driver file. Haven't had a problem doing it this way in both x86
AND x64 versions i have on my box.

I did that when removing the drivers installed by the ccc installation. But
there is no option for that when removing the drivers that windows
installs... however I did go in and manually remove all the files referenced
in the "driver details" section and tried re-installing the driver. Still no
go. A few times I've had to go into safe mode cause there is no video at
all... then I just uninstall the video card and boot back to normal mode and
I can see stuff... but without it being able to load the driver for the video
card.

What motherboard do you have? I have heard of this problem code 43 being
caused not by the actual graphics card itself, but by the controller on the
motherboard that links to the graphics. (Processor to AGP controller)

Hey dfeifer, I'm using the version that is currently downloadable from the
AMD/ATI website. The date on the driver is Dec 5th if I look in the device
manager, and the actual file (atikmdag.sys) is dated Dec 5th as well.

The version showing up in device manager is 8.31.100.321 but when I look at
the properties in Windows explorer it shows File version as 7.1.1.537, but
maybe that has a different meaning.

I've tried manually pointing to the file as you suggested several times... I
wonder if others are having the same problems?

Thanks again guys!

Ty

Hey Jane, I've got an ASUS P4R800-VM. Any ideas of how to determine if it's
the motherboard?

Thanks!

Ty

Sorry, what I meant by uninstall was to do it in
Add/Remove. There should be an entry there,
'ATI Software Uninstall Utility', then do the install
of beta using the generic VGA driver that Windows
should load (??), or make it load a VGA driver.
Worked on my machine, but we all have different hardware, etc.

The ATI SUU I mentioned takes some time to do, so make a coffee !

Hey Jane, I've got an ASUS P4R800-VM. Any ideas of how to determine if it's
the motherboard?

Thanks!

I've got exactly the same problem at Ty with a Sapphire Radeon 9600. I also
have a different motherboard Abit sr7 - 8x. I think it is more likely the
driver, although I did have big difficulties installing the Sis accelerated
graphics port drivers on my machine. This a Vista Ultimate clean install.

I'm going to switch it with a different (equivalent) NVIDIA graphics card
and see what happens. Will let you know.

PS this was with the Jan 29th ATI drivers and the RTM of Vista.

With my Nvidia 5900 it works just fine. So I conclude the ATI drivers do not
work properly, and it's nothing to do with the motherboard, given the same
graphics card on two separate motherboards causes the same error.

Hi all

there are now final versions of the drivers you written. ... but what
a shame, the problems are still the same.

i tried work with the rtm drivers, with the original vista drivers and
with the newest final drivers, always error 43. and: yes, we speak
from vista drivers, and yes, i removed the old ones, and so on and so
on.

did someone get help from ati or microsoft? or has someone any other
ideas?
