Hi. I have always been an NVidia guy, so know not a lot about Radeon
cards. Well, my X1900XT was delivered today, and i've installed it,
but according to CATALYST, the idling temperature is around 60 degrees,
and during gameplay, it goes over 80 degrees. Does sound right?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

That's about right. The X1900XTX and XT are very hot running cards.

My X1900XTX idles at 54c and peaks at 80-81c during heavy use.

Your idle could be a little lower but seems well within bounds. Add some
more intake to your case if you can.

Just three.

1. Yes those temps are normal.

2. Disable the card's automatic fan throttling immediately.
There are reports all over the internet of cards burning
themselves out if this throttling isn't disabled.

3. For a $600 card you'd think ATI would have put a
half decent cooler on it.

It's not currently possible to disable the automatic fan throttling using
the CCC. You can manually set the fan rpm with the leaked overclocker
utility but that is hardly an elegant solution.

Just out of curiosity, why don't you think the HSF is "half decent". In my
experience it is one of the better vid card HSF's on the market.

Many thanks guys, it's put my mind at ease a little. I got a lower
idle today, left the pc doing nothing too stressful and it got as low
as 53 degrees, so this probably sounds normal. i would, or would not,
disable automatic fan throttling...if i knew what it was. Anywho,
cheers guys

OK, scrap that last message, i know what the auto fan throttling is.
Cant see how having it enabled would burn the card out, in fact,i would
think disabling it would cause that more than having it enabled.

Think about it for a few minutes, maybe you'll figure it out.
