hi! i can only use 6.4 catalyst driver...if I try 6.5 or 6.6 or 6.7 or
omega, system will restart without reaching desktop... a blue screen can be
seen for less than half a second short after the windows logo appears, then
I got a reset...

I can't understand why this doesn't happen with 6.4...I'm willing to install
and use the new ATI driver releases.

My pc:
xp sp2
amd 2800+
768 ram
mobo gigabye Ga7v- via kt 400
3 x HDs
1 x dvd
FD
onboard audio
power: 400w

Thank you for any help!!!

Go to System Properties , Advanced , Startup and Recovery , and
uncheck Automatically Restart you will then be able to see the blue
screen error message, also goto Start, Settings, Crontrol Panel,
Administrative Tools, Event Viewer and check out any errors
Then head over to Microsoft.com and check out error messages in thier
Knowledge Base

thanks! I'll try this tip ASAP!

Might be you need to do a clean install of ATI drivers.
Delete ATI drivers/software
Then use the program Driver Cleaner Pro to completly clean out ATI software.
http://www.drivercleaner.net/
Reboot, then try installing 6.7.
Then reinstall VIA drivers.

Thanks Frodo...it didn't worked
Nice and useful piece of software, anyway. thanks!

You ARE removing/installing drivers from an Administrator's account, with
antivirus turned off, right? New ATi driver releases are particularly
sensitive to write-permission and sharing-violation issues.

This is the blue screen I get when installing drivers newer than 6.4
I can't find anything about this message...
thanks!

Did you use to have a different brand of video card, like NVIDIA?
Try using Driver Cleaner Pro to clear out drivers from other brands of Video
cards.

Thanks Frodo. No, I used a 9700pro. A few days ago I installed the 1600, and
big problems starded. System recognised the card, but weird behaviours
started. From the word go I could not install latest ati drivers...then I
got more and more error messages, each time I tried to install a
software...I surfed the www for days looking for a reason or a solution,
found nothing, so I did a format and a fresh install...but never I got
drivers newer than 6.4 installed. I am thinking about my power supply
unit...could it be it?, but then, why in the world should 6.4 work?
I posted a link to my blue screen above...I can't find anything similar in
the web...still looking...thank you.

Maybe the X1600 is slightly defective?
I believe the X1600 AGP comes with an extra connector for power, is it
plugged in & firmly?
Have you tried reseating the card in the AGP slot?

Hi First! Yes I' m doing it the way you suggest. I reinstalled my "old"
9700pro, and all is working properly, using driver 6.7.
I installed 6.7 with my 9700pro in, then took it away and reinstalled the
x1600: no joy: system won't start, crashing short after the windows logo. I
think this is an hardware problem: my sapphire must be defective. there's
nothing else I can think of.
thank you!

Thank you Frodo. I double checked the card, and it is properly seated, with
power connector plugged.
As I say in my answer to First , my 9700pro works ok. and I can use any
driver I like, as long as I don't install the sapphire x1660pro. I do
believe it must be defective :-(
thanks!

Have you tried updating the bios?
The motherboard KT400 chipset is getting on the old side.

Guess it does sound like defective hardware

Do you have the exact model number of your board Ga-7V???
There are 11 Gigabyte motherboards with starting with Ga-7v

Hi. I have exactly the same problem. I have a X700 AGP and a Gigabyte
GA-7VAX motherboard (VIA KT400).
