I just bought a Sapphire Radeon 9600 non Pro which comes with a heatsink
like the authentic ATI cards. I wanted to see how hot the heatsink gets, so
I ran some OpenGL screen savers to work the card (don't have any games
installed yet). After a couple of minutes I touched the heatsink and the
thing was pretty hot. It didn't burn my fingers, but I probably wouldn't be
able to keep my fingers on it for more than 5 seconds before it gets really
uncomfortable. Is this normal? Just being cautious.

Thanks,
Harry

Had a similar problem, games would crash after a while and the heatsink was
red hot. I got a Vantec Iceberq chipset cooler and fitted that to it, cold
as ice and everything works fine now :)

HMMM thats what their their for ?

Want it cooler add a fan.

it seems as these cards get more sophisticated the hotter they are going to get...spawning all kinds of cooling devices and maybe
even seeing a heat sensor added to MB's(if not already). I was scanning the ATI site for recomended temps, but as i thought, i don't
see it addressed.

I'm no expert, but that's what a heatsink is supposed to do . . . give off
heat. If the card doesn't malfunction, and you don't smell anything, I
wouldn't worry.

Quite common.. Sometimes the clips spread uneven pressure of the heatsink
over the core, or maybe there was dirt, air or some other insulate matter
bonded in... depending on your setup...

Thats why some people have been able to lower their temps significantly by
replacing the default cooler... I know my old duron used to run at like 51
deg.. I replaced the HS with a better unit and its down to like 42 fully
loaded...

There are many factors.. but most often it is uneven pressure from the HS,
or too much or contaminated matter in the thermal transfer compound...

Ax.

Is the fan still turning on the heatsink + fan unit ?

I have a Sapphire Radeon 9700 Pro, bought December last year that is
currently out of my machine, awaiting a replacement cooler. Currently
slumming it with a GF2MX :-( (sniff !)

Why has it waited so long ? 1 - I been trying to fix the main pooter
as well ! (Ram failure)

2 - Sapphire won't talk to me ! I've sent the European offices several
emails and included the N American office on my last email to them. No
acknowledgement. Next step, a complaint to ATi about them ....

It might be worth checking to see if the fan is turning - if you can't
crane your head around (I can't on my rig ...) try a mirror to peek at
the fan. (cd might work ...)
