We all know the various aliases that the the idiot uses.

We do NOT need to be reminded in a response to each post the idiot makes.

Each response to one of the idiot's posts, even if it is to remind us who
the idiot is and that we should not 'feed the trolls', is doing nothing more
that 'feeding the trolls' and letting the idiot know that he/she has an
audience.

The sooner the idiot get's ignored, the sooner the idiot will get tired of
the game and go away.

I wholeheartedly agree! I (like others) have in the past succumbed to
the temptation to argue back, but alas I now realise the futility of it all.

I support your post and would encourage everyone here to make a genuine
effort to "Stop feeding the Troll", I actually believe this would be
more entertaining.

Good initiative.

Can you start with the ones you know, by instance Aaron seems to be
somewhere in a killbox from me, however I cannot even find it anymore, so
that one I never see, (crazy threads to read for me).

I hope people will do as you ask. Although I am not sure from some if that
are trolls or not, so let them respond as that is misplaced told.

I know which one will be in front of your list, however I can tell you, he
is not intended to troll.

So if someone posts a question, and IdiotBoy responds with one of his less
inflammatory messages and just says "You can't do that" or "VB is going
away" or "This is stupid, you should do it in VB6", and nobody else
provides an answer, we shouldn't respond, even if the OP is not familiar
with the group? You don't care if they believe him?

I agree that less response *to* AK is needed, but how do you feel about
responding to the OP and letting him know that AK is a troll?

Than you can answer direct to the OP with a very clear message, no problem
at all probably one of the other for sure the more long time regulars will
than do that the same while the message from the Troller is than disapearing
between those, but don't answer him never in that thread even if he is than
telling that you are wrong. The fun is than gone in a week.

Good point Robin.

I am advocating that in such a case that you respond to the OP's post rather
than the the idiot's post.

There are also ways of refuting what the idiot might say without fuelling a
potentional flame war.

For example:

If you post a link then make sure that the link
is valid and content at the target of the link
is authoratative

If you post a code fragment then ensure that the
code fragment will actually work.

If you post a fragment of 'aircode' that might not
work, or a fragment of pseudo-code, then make it
clear that it is such code.

I also find it useful to qualify a code fragment with a phrase that leaves
the reader in no doubt that it is NOT the ONLY way to achieve something. If
the reader perceives that you might be saying that it is the only way
(regardless of your intention), then you are likely to get jumped on from a
great height and have it pointed out that there are umpteen different
(valid) ways of achieving the same thing.

One also has to keep in mind that when some is reading your post, he or she
does not have the luxury of hearing the chuckle in your voice, seeing the
grin on your face or observing your body language in general. This means
that their comprehension can only be guided by what you actually wrote and
we all know how easy it is to mis-interpret something in the abscence of
other signals.

I've added all the aliases to my kill file... and I don't see his/her/it's
post show up :-D

Just a guess here, but you're probably using Google to access this
newsgroup right? If so you don't have access to a kill file (afaik).
Most other newsreaders do have the ability to block certain posters -
this list is the mentioned killfile.

Thanks, Stephany. I shall endeavor to make it so.

As for the other guidelines, I already try to follow those, so I hope I
have not been doing a poor job. I try to test every piece of code I post,
but will try to be clearer when I haven't.

I read this thread and was wondering what Kill file is and how you use
it?

It's a function of most major newsreader applications (i.e. Xnews, Agent,
etc). A kill file allows you to flag posts by a certain criteria (i.e.
Name, e-mail, subject keywords etc). The application will then hide all the
offending posts :-)

Once you know how to use a newsreader well, you can view only what you want
to see. More or less everything else is hidden away!
 
Please don't think that my comments are in any way aimed at you personally
Robin.

My use of the word 'you' was meant to mean anyone who reading the comments,
i.e., the community as a whole.

I know, as well as anybody, just how easy it is to dash of a few ill-chosen
words in response to something and have it turn into a flame war or a series
of 'did, didn't' posts.

I see from the headers in your post that you're using OE.

Simply select a post from someone you want to "killfile" then go to the
Message menu and choose Block Sender...

If you accidentally block someone you didn't mean to, you can go
Tools->Message Rules->Blocked Senders List... and remove them from that
list. The latest ones added are usually at the end of the list.

BTW, to mung your email address, it would be better to add .invalid to the
end as that is recognized by DNS as being a genuine TLD to be ignored -
someone might actually register doyoureallythinkthisisreal and then they'll
get spam from "people" who scour newsgroups for email addresses. Adding
..local to the end isn't a good idea as about 10% of the load on the root DNS
servers is due to that.
