Is using Sandisk SD cards worth it (assuming you're not a wedding photographer or photojournalist)? Looking round Sandisk is £5 to £10 upwards, whereas non-branded cards are really, really cheap.

I think so but the only real advantage is the time it takes your camera to be ready for the next shot. It's a speed thing.

If you have a camera that does speed/multi/exposures, using Sandisk III you will notice the difference.

But if you're just casually snapping away, any decent branded memory card will do.

I'm not aware of the Transcend cards CL has mentioned, I shall have to check them out next time I need a card.

And on another kinda related note, I seem to have lost the transfer USB leads to both my Samsung D900 mobile phone and my Nikon D40X camera.

Anybody know a good UK site to buy those leads.

I wonder where the hell they went  Probably got lost when I moved house.

I am very familiar with Transcend memory products as I have used them in the past, even though they may not be as popular as the Sandisk or Lexar are (the two best brands in my opinion out there). Transcend cards are good but not the last word in performance when you look at their entire line-up. Some better than the others, unlike from the two top producers who happen to excel in every card they bring out in the market.

Flops mentioned about speed and he is absolutely right. The other thing to note is that the reliability of Sandisk and Lexar is based on the fact that they make everything in-house, memory chip, controller etc that go into the making of the finished product. The integrated process ensures that everything works the way it is supposed to.

The memory card hold the most important things - the moments captured. Some cannot be repeated, if lost they are gone forever. I personally would never skimp on that as it is only a fraction of the cost of the whole setup, besides your time and effort.

The cable for the Nikon is available at Amazon UK (despatched from ExpressPro, one of their market place traders, but you pay via Amazon) at £1.49.

They also have them at Curry's Partmaster for £13.99.

Thank you Madam :)

I've ordered the one from Amazon. It's from a third party seller so with postage works out at around £5.50 but is still cheaper than the £13.00 that my local Staples shop wanted for it.

Also purchased a 4Gb Sandisk Extreme III SD memory card for £13.00 + £5.00 postage = £18.00 total whilst I was at it. This gives me 30 minutes of high quality video footage on my Coolpix S500 :thumb:

Memory card price has sure come down since I last looked.

And I've sent a PM to WF.

Thanks everyone - and an interesting article on prices

Thanks for that everyone! So I guess consensus is that Sandisk is reassuringly expensive!!!

There's an interesting list on MoneySavingExpert about cheap memory cards at the moment. The cheapest they list is a free 1GB SD card (from 365memory + £2.95 postage) or an 8GB Sandisk card for £17.99 from Play.

Makes you realise how much these things have gone down in price. I remember paying £40 for 512k CF card a few years ago!

A friend bought a 4GB Memory Card for his phone last year, same price now gets you 8GB.
