Samsung spinpoint drive hum

I have 2 of the spinpoint drives, one is a 200GB SATA, the other is a
brand new 300GB PATA. I am a bit concerned about the 300GB because the
mechanical 'hum' transmitted through the case is approx twice that of
the 200GB and much more noticable. Does it sound normal for 2 similar
drives of the same make to have such differing mechanical noise, or
could this drive be a lemon?

TIA

Is the hum constant or does it vary cyclicly ?

If it varys cyclicly its like a beat frequency between the two drives.

Try with just the new drive plugged in to see if it hums by itself.
If it does, I'd return it myself. I do have one of them and it doesnt hum.

I'm comparing the 2 drives whilst they are out of the case, so there
are no external factors, or beat frequencies between them. It's a
constant hum, which is audible when the drive is sat on a carpeted
floor next to the pc (albeit rather thin carpet!).
I am inclined to send it back as I can't see how there should be such
a difference between 2 similar drives...

Is yours a HD300LD PATA?

Yeah, I would if it was mine.

I took back two Buffalo external 250GB HDs containing Spinpoints
because they hummed a lot more than my 160GB Buffalo with a Western
Digital in it. OTOH I have a 2-3 year old 200GB Hitachi that vibrates
noticeably more than my other drives, but it seems to be fine.
