These things are so damn cheap, and people "seem" to like them for
being cool and quiet in reviews....

I wanna get 4 for a raid0+1 but it'd suck to blow my $$$ multiplied 4
times. can anyone share experiences about Samsung.

FWIW, I've had a couple of their 120 gig drives running in my Tivo for
about a year now with no problems. Went for the Samsungs in that
application because the Tivo doesn't have a lot of cooling and I wanted
it to stay quiet--the other quiet drives available in that capacity were
7200 RPM and put out more heat.

If you're doing RAID 0+1 then losing a drive isn't a big deal in any
case.

And you dont see too many howling when they have bought one either.

Havent seen anyone say one has failed.

Not that that proves a damned thing, they are well down
on the others volume of sales wise, basically 5th in volume.

I think I'll take the risk and buy them... they will be running 24/7, and
when in use (this is in a realtime video system) they are basically getting
abused. I'll be back here to report on how good/bad they work for me. I know
(from Tom's hardware) that they don't compete well in terms of raw speed to
the bigger names but I'm not too worried in a raid config.

Yeah, I did myself and havent regretted it.

And a decent RAID 0+1 array is no big deal if a drive does die.

3 year warranty on all their drives too, handy bonus.

Thats not true of the latest P80 drives from Samsung.

Yeah, they'll be fine.

GREAT INFO... thanks Rod Speed and J.Clarke for all the positive feedback.
This is what I wanted to hear. going to pricewatch right now....

Have been running a 20GB 5400 Samsung for a few years with no
problems.

Just got myself a 160GB Samsung. Really quiet and really cool.
Especially when compared to hot Barracudas or noisy WDs. My
alternative was a Maxtor Plus 9 if i could locate a Samsung as they
can be hard to source here in the UK.

I don't think I am going to be unduly disappointed with its
reliability.
