Samsung ML1710 - refills?

I think the box says something about including a 1,000-copy cartridge.
Does this mean it's actually a smaller cartridge, or that it's not
filled to capacity? Just checking to see if I'd have to purchase
another empty cartridge, in addition to toner refills at
tonerrefill.com. Thanks!

Thanks Al. I take it the cartridge is exactly the same as the
replacement cartridges, except that it's only partially filled?

Incidentally, tonerrefillkits.com doesn't have any empty 1710
cartridges, so I guess you'd hafta purchase a new one, then refill
it...
Hi Steve,
I kind of looks like they do carry an empty cartridge, right below the
refill kit. Anyways seems like a good printer. Do you own a 1710 or are you
thinking on buying one? I know they are about $100 after rebate and IR
through August.

They're exactly the same except that the 3000 page unit weighs slightly more
than the 1000 page unit. The model is ML1710D3/XAA versus ML1710D1/XAA.

Samsung uses a "Starter Cartridge", a practice a deplore. It's the main
reason I have not brought one of their low-end printers.

Fact is, it's a few bucks worth of crushed plastic, and it's dirty-pool to
pull such shenanigans IMHO.

Yep, that sucks. Just wanted to make sure it's actually the same as
their regular cartridge, just not filled all the way with toner. So I
can at least use refills without having to also purchase a new empty
(or full) cartridge first...

(or full) cartridge first...Well, since I bought my Printer for $99.99 after the rebate and in store
discount at best Buy and a new cartridge is $79.95 (Best Buy) I find it fair to
use a partial cartridge to get the unit price down. Heck, if they had put a
full cartridge in the printer the net price for the Laser printer sans the
cartridge would have been only $20.04!

Hey Steve - I just also purchased this printer at BB. The salesman
said the starter cart only lasts for about 300-400 pages (not sure I
believe this though - I think it is more).
I also need to pick up a USB cable somewhere (just not at BB...)
So it sounds like you also are going to go the re-fill route via
tonerrefillkits.com. Anyone vouch for how these refill kits work and
how messy it is?

Actually, I think I'm gonna take it back and go with the Brother
HL-1440. At about half the cost of consumables, will make up the
price difference in a few months.

As for refill kits, I think it depends on which toner cartridge you're
refilling. Some are messier than others. One tip - don't squeeze the
toner bottle to make it come out faster, unless you wanna be like that
Peanuts character who walked around with a black cloud around him all
day. :)

I had looked into the Brother also but the Samsung seemed better made
IMHO.
You must be doing a lot more printing than I am.
I plan on refilling the 'starter' cartridge included in the box and
haven't decided yet if I should go out and also buy an empty
cartridge.

Where you gonna buy the Brother?

Thanks,
Walleye

Not sure if the starter cartridge is the same as their standard
cartridges. It's only maybe 2-3,000 pages before you've pretty much
made up the price diff. Not sure where I'm gonna buy it, depends on
when the Epson craps out...

How about CompUSA this week, $100 after rebates? I have an
earlier Lexmark-branded Samsung that works like a charm.

Has anyone experimented with refilling the 1710 drum with the off
brand Universal kit #6. This kit works with the printers listed
below. Unfortunately the 1710 is not in the list. It would seem
strange that the 1700 series is the only one that is not compatible
with this kit. If it were to work we could cut our cost from about
$75 for one drum/toner kit from Samsung to about $38 for two refills
including tool to punch the hole. Based upon 3000 sheet from each
alternative the cost per sheet would be about $.025 for Samsung
original to $.00633 per sheet. After the completion of the second
refill we would need to get a new ML1710D3/XAA by Samsung.

I wrote to Samsung to find out the expected capacity of the drum that
came with the unit. When i get the "official" answer i will post it
here.

We have not yet tried the 1710 or 1750 with Kit #6 so we dont know if
it will work.

There should be no damage done if it does not work.

We will probably get around to testing these models, but as of now we
have not done so. We have to buy a 1710 printer to do this, so it
will happen only once we get enough enquiries.

This thread has been idle for a few months, but no one ever answered
the question about "starter cartridges"--or if anyone did, I missed
it. Is this 1000-page cartrige that comes with the printer physically
the same as the regular 3000-page cartrige, but only 1/3 full of
toner? ...or is this thing just a mini cartrige? If it is a "mini",
can it be refilled like a normal cartridge, but again yield only a
third of the prints of the normal cartrige?

Same as the regular, just not filled all the way. I refilled the one on
my ML-1750 with a full refill of toner with no issues. :)

Did you have to burn a hole in the cartridge to pour the toner
through, or is there a plug somewhere on this thing?

I have the 1710 and have bought refill toner, refilled it and it works
beautifully. My understanding is that it is a regular full size
cartridge filled to a small fraction of its capacity. The refilling is
very easy, just removing a soft plastic plug and pouring the new toner
in. I bought my toner from ebay. I'd like to give you the name of the
supplier but don't have it available at this moment.

I tried my first refill and it was a failure. I guess the new
cartridges don't have the stopper; you have to actually carve a hole
into the thing to put toner in. I managed to do that, but when I shook
the cartridge, the toner went right out the bottom of the cartridge and
into the trash can I was working over.

Is it likely I did the procedure wrong, was the cartridge itself broken,
or has Samsung deliberately made it impossible to refill cartridges
because that's where the money is?

Thanks in advance.

One may as well being with Michael Blake's letter to the newsgroup:

Do you mean the 'stopper' area no longer exists (see here:
http://www.refilltoner.com/samsungML1510Refill.html) or that it just isn't
removable anymore? I ask because I can see what looks like a 'stopper
plug' in mine (bought yesterday).
I managed to do that, but when I shook
the cartridge, the toner went right out the bottom of the cartridge and
into the trash can I was working over.

Leaked out of the hole you'd carved into? Did you not use a sealant?

I'm feeling panicky if they've rendered it impossible to refill, having
just bought a ML-1750 (same cartridge) on the basis of such convenience.
I'm sure there must be a way around it though...

In some cartridges, according to the instructions I got, they said that
the the stopper has been sealed. (I also bought the Samsung on the
assumption that you can easily refill it. The alternate instructions
were to literally burn a hole in the thing and pour toner in.)

I did seal the hole I carved, but the stuff literally leaked out of
seemingly every orifice the cartridge has. Maybe I didn't carve the
hole in the correct place... The diagram I got with the instructions
was a bit vague...

I'll try again with the next cartridge and let you know how it goes...
