The printer is starting to blotch, a little to the left of center on
the page, with a pattern that repeats down the page at what looks to be
about the diameter of the drum (the shiny green cylinder in the bottom
of the toner cartridge, right?) I took the cartridge out and had a look,
couldn't see any marks on the drum. This is I guess less than halfway
through the first replacement cartridge, which has Samsung written all
over the box. The cartridge model is "ML-1710D3/SEE".
I took the cartridge out and tapped it a little on both ends while
I was inspecting it, that seems to have helped a little, but the
blotches are still there, just not as pronounced.
The only thing I can think of that might have contributed is envelope
printing, with fairly frequent jams (the printer is picky about down-
turned corners on the envelope, and jams up at the back, right before
the delivery tray, fairly regularly). This never seemed to be a problem
for the toner cartridge that came with the printer. My only complaint
with that cartridge was that it ran out too soon.
I just tried another print after turning on "Toner Save". That made no
visible change. I guess I should have turned that on a long time ago.
On closer examination, the blotch looks to be a repetition of the area
of heaviest printing on the envelope. In particular, I can see the
vertical bars of the postage imprint I printed on an envelope repeated
faintly about 3 1/2" down the envelope. And the heaviest part of the
blotch matches the bar code in the postage imprint (the heaviest
printing I do regularly).
Should I try having the original toner cartridge refilled? (I still
have it, in the box that the replacement cartridge came in). If I do,
when it runs out, what to do with the cartridge that is blotching?
Does the refill company fix this sort of problem? Or is it just trash
($80. worth)?
I was pretty happy with the cost and convenience of printing my own
envelopes with postage, but if the toner cartridge is going to die
after < 1000 pages (I estimate) it's not such a deal.
I think I will try:

How much worse could it be?
