details the drive so as a last resort you could try emailing them through
the contact button for jumper setting info. Usually drives have stickers on
them explaining which jumper arrangements are required for Master, Slave or
Cable Select configuration. If its the only drive on the HDD Controller
channel then it should normally be configured as Master. If there's a second
device on the same channel, then one needs to be jumpered as master and the
other as slave. Cable Select is an option on some drives and was more common
with some OEMs/system developers - its not widely needed these days and
master or slave normally does the trick. USB drive housings expect drives to
be jumpered as master. Whether you change the external drive over would
depend on what you want to accomplish and what the other option is, I cant
help you with that without more info.....

One further point - some drives have an additional configuration
for 'alone' or 'single'. It may well be one with no jumper at all,
or the jumper in a parking place. The point of using this is that
the hardware, at power on, will not wait around for a slave to
respond. Otherwise you may often get a long power on delay, and
after one or two minutes the bios may announce "slave not working"
and carry on. This definitely applies to my WD drives.

Go here, enter SV4002H in the search box and download the
installation guide.

It's a little weird, but does support cable select and restricting
size to 32GB, instead of the 40GB if your BIOS doesn't support 40.

Please don't top-post, especially when you see the existing thread
is properly bottom-posted. I fixed this one so things make sense.

Your URL looks as if it should be found by backing up slightly on
the one Paul Murphy suggested.

ok...

it has three lots of Master|Slave|Cable Select
jumper settings...

one is listed as Lower 32GB,
the second as Upper 32GB,
and the third as 32GB clip.

there doesn't seem to be any mention on the website
about this - re: which is which and what each does.

any suggestions?

cheers.

(it's listed as a 40GB drive - at 5400rpm - i think)

Did you read either of the previous posts by myself and Paul.
They give you urls to the manual, which has very explicit directions.

Which he managed to lose from the quotes by his silly top-posting.

When I approach a closed door to walk through, by default I
crash into it unless I were to open it first. What do I do
about it?

Move to the bottom, snipping material that has nothing to do with
your reply, and leaving that which is germane, on the way. You can
add your material interspersed on the way or on the bottom. Don't
leave it for others to clean up your mess. Even using inferior
software you can do a creditable job - others do.
