Hello,
I just got a Samsung CD-RW that advertises the ability to read & write
at 52x, and to rewrite at 24x. However, I've tried several cd-burning
programs, including Nero, which came with the drive, and they all report
that the drive can't exceed 32x, thus preventing me from using the drive
at its maximum capability. I thought maybe the drive needed a firmware
update, but the samsung website doesn't provide one for this drive. Any
help will be greatly appreciated. Thanx!

-Caleb

Remember, CD-RWs (and DVD writers) can write at that speed with compatible
CD-Rs or CD-RWs only. Shoving a generic CD-R in there may not reach the
speeds you want. In general, I find Fujifilm and Verbatim are universal
brands that most burner manufacturers support.

I'd check Samsung's site and see if they list recommended media.

Have you tried updating Nero?

A friend of mine recently got a nice new 52x/24x/52x CD-RW.
It came with Nero 5 which i installed, and then ran the Nero Info Tool.
It reports the maximum write speed of the drive as 48x - obviously this has
nothing to do with the quality of the any media being used.
Maybe it's not reading the CD-RW's firmware information correctly.

As the CD-RW is being used in a Pentium 233MMX it's maximum write speed
won't even reach 52x even if it was capable of this speed.
In this old pc with ATA33 drives it can only write at a maximum of about 8x
anyway.

Thanks for all your help. I looked on the CD, and it claims to support
48x. So I thought "hmmm...maybe if I change writing speed down to
48x"...I did, and it still refuses to go past 32. It gives me this
message "Medium does not support 48x, switching to 32x." I'm using
Linux, and medium refers to the disk, not the drive, correct? The brand
of the CD is "Great Quality" :P...perhaps they're just crappy CDs?

"Great Quality"? Never heard of them. Yes, the medium refers to the actual
disc, not the drive. That message you received: "Medium does not support
48x, switching to 32x." says it all. I would check Samsung's site and check
which media they support. It's like I said, I found you can't go wrong with
Verbatim, Mitsui or Fujifilm. All of them at least support writing up to
40X. But still, I'd check Samsung's site.

Here is a Samsung 52X drive, could be yours:

I checked the PDF for the 252B drive, I found this:

======================================================

Recommended Disc Types

CD-R RITEK , TAIYO YUDEN , MCC , ACER , SKC , BEALL , MPO , CMC , PRODISK ,
MAXELL , FUJI ,
MCI , POSTECH , TDK , GIGA , PLASMON
CD-RW CD-RW : RICOH , RITEK , MCC , PRODISK , SKC , CMC
(1X - 4X)

H/S-RW : RICOH , CMC , RITEK , ACER , PRODISK , SKC
(10X)

U/S RW : MCC , RITEK
(24X)

======================================================

Hope this gives you an idea. From the list above, I would try the Taiyo
Yudens (which are also known as Fujifilm, only the ones made in Japan),
Maxells and TDKs.

Good luck.

I have the same drive u have and it did't burn faster than 32x even on cd-r
given as 52x.
I've changed the settings of DMA tu U-DMA and it started burning @ 52x.
Obviously it doesn't actually start at 52x, speed increase constantly, and
only the 300MB are buned @ 52x

Hope this help.
