Sample rate?

Greetings scanners!

Can someone explain to me what "scanning rate" means, or at least give me a
link to somewhere that explains it? I'm using a Nikon LS-4000 film scanner
and "Nikon Scan 3.1" if that makes a difference.

Thanks all,

Well, for a start, it *can* mean something completely different from
what you have in the subject line of your post! Which one do you mean?
;-)

Scanning rate - the rate that the image is scanned. ie. how fast is the
image scanned - usually measured in "scan lines per second", but often
corrupted to wrongly mean total scan time.

Sample rate - the rate that the samples are captured on the CCD. ie.
how many samples per unit time are captured. This can mean the same
thing as scanning rate but in many contexts the "rate" actually refers
to units of distance rather than units of time, so the sample rate
becomes synonymous with sample density, ie. how many samples are
captured within a unit distance, such as "pixels per inch".
