I promise I have spent over an hour looking through this discussion group and
can find plenty of people with the same problem I have; but no solution.
I can receive emails fine, but can't send any. I get the error:
The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'is it working',
Account: 'New email', Server: 'smtp.xxxxx.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I have tried using and not using authentification (my provider says not to);
and I have tried switching off my Norton protection.

Still isnt working - any help grately appreciately.

I'm surprised you haven't read that switching off Norton
will not solve anything. It needs to be uninstalled.

I'm having this exact same error...but I have Mcafee? do I need to uninstall
that too (not just as Norton case)?

Yes.

Use AVG or Avast (both free) as a replacement
but don't use the email scanning function.

Thanks, but uninstalling Norton didnt work.
Any more suggestions?

It is a bit difficult to analyse your error message
since you have covered up essential details such as the
server id. Who is your ISP?
The xxxxxx bit?

Note. Norton can leave residual traces of its presence in
the WM account so it is probably worth deleting and
recreating it once Norton is removed.

If you are a BT broadband customer - then report your problem to them - don't
try to do anything on your PC. I have posted the following and similar
messages on numerous other threads here - all reporting the same problem.

I too am a BT Broadband customer who cannot send emails using Windows mail
since yesterday morning (24/07/07). As well as my Windows Vista PC I have an
old PC with Windows Xp and Outlook-Express which can send emails. The problem
is obviosly with the BT Smtp servers and nothing to do with Windows Mail or
any Anti-virus software (I am using AVG) and from what I can tell it is quite
frequent for BT to mess up their server settings. I had 6 weeks of being
unable to send emails earlier this year - when I was using Xp . Actually it
would work when I had an IP address in a certain range - but not in other
ranges. The web is littered with thousands of BT customers complaining for
the last year and more, about being unable to send emails, when previously
they have been working fine. My advice would be to leave your PC and all its
software alone - don't change anything, if you can get by using a web mail
service, do so until BT get round to fixing their end. But also send a
complaint or error report to BT support - surely if enough of us tell them
about the same problem they might wake up and do something to fix it.

In case you haven't seen more recent useful posts on this problem, try this:

Thanks to JP & YR the following solved it for me:

go to email TOOLS
click on ACCOUNTS
on every one of your accounts do the following:

Click on one account
click on PROPERTIES on the right hand side

In the new window click on the ADVANCED Tab
In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP): window change the figure 25 to 587
Click on OK

When all accounts have been done., you should have recovered from this silly
problem.
