Same Problem - Importing Files

Hi,

I was having problems in importing video files for editing in WMM, and
finaly I had to re-install the Windows to avoid this problem. .. after
re-installing the Windows, this problem of imporing files was not there any
more, and whatever file I wanted, could easily be imported... BUT .. it
worked only for 2 days and after that this problem has started again.... I
have noticed that some of other people are having almost the same problem,
and it seems that almost every 3rd or 4th person is having the same message
in importing files which says, "C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\My
Pictures\abc.jpg could not be imported. Unspecified error"

I think this is some kind of a problem which needs to be looked by Microsoft
itself.. --

Well I can tell you that anytime that exact error message is posted in this
newsgroup the same response will be given and that is that quite a few
people have reported problems with using JPG files. This means that you
should convert them to BMP and the problem will likely go away.

Thanks Wojo, but the importing problem is not only with the PICTURES or JPEG
files, it is coming even with the Video files, which I have been using for
editing before, and with the MP3 files, and I have never had a such problem
before, what I have noticed that this problem has started just a month ago.
Otherwise I never had problems in importing MPEG, MPG, MOV, AVI, JPEG, BMP or
MP3... I re-installed the Windows XP and at that time this problem was
resolved, but after a couple of days it has started again.. I really dont
have any idea ... if you could help me out...
Thanks

Well if reinstalling Windows worked and then suddenly it stopped working
again I suspect that you have another program that you installed that is
causing a conflict, probably with codecs, and the same program was installed
before. I am curious what version of Movie Maker are you using?
I ask because MPEG files rarely work with WMM2.1 and MPEG2 files never work
and neither do MOV files. I haven't had a problem with JPG files but do
sometimes have a MP3 that causes audio irregularities.
I suggest going to this site:
http://www.free-codecs.com/
Download and install the Windows XP Codec pack and see if that helps.

If you could indeed import and *Use" such a variety of formats in WMM,
you had a very unique version of WMM, certainly a version that MS do
not market?
Importing is one thing, getting a format onto the timeline and producing
something is altogether a different kettle of oily mackeral.
WMM is very fussy about what compatible formats it will produce anything
from, and the majority you listed as having previous "success" with.........
It just didn't happen, not with WMM it didn't.

ahhh good call.
I just checked out that app and it can easily get confusing if you lock a
folder you don't want locked.

Hi Papa John,
Since I have no idea about Folder lock settings, so what I have done, I
un-install this application and problem is SOLVED .,,,I mean the problem
which I was having in importing files... was resolved ... and now WMM is
working fine... Now since I want to use Folder lock application as well...
what should I do in order to keep both the applications (Folder Lock & WMM)
in working.

Thank You very much once again for your help..

Thank you very much PAPA JOHN for your thoughts, yes I do have Folder Lock,
but I dont know what settings you are talking about, can you please be
specific and help me finding these settings... I mean where and how can find
and correct these settings.. Once Again Thank You Very Much....

Firstly, I am sorry that I am replying you late... As for Folder Lock, I have
found a solution, I have installed Folder Lock in my D Drive, instead of C:,
so now both the applications are working fine. Anyway I really appreciate
your efforts and help in solving my problem.. Thank you once again.

From what I saw after installing and checking it out it is simply a matter
of what you lock with folder lock.
I installed it and ran Movie Maker with no problems but if I decided to lock
"C:/programs" or any other folder that Movie Maker uses then WMM didn't work
properly.
