Same local domain as internet domain

We have recently set up our company web page which is hosted by our ISP. The
problem is we can't access the site from any workstation on our network. My
guess is that because our LAN domain name is identical to the internet
domain (ie xxxxx.com) our DNS server doesn't know how to resolve the request
for the external address. We are running Win2K server with ICS. Does any one
have any ideas on how we could rectify this problem without going through
the tedious process renaming our LAN domain.

Add records to the internal DNS server for www, mail, or whatever. with the
IP of the website or server hosting the service.

I appreciate the help. Can you tell me how to create this record? I only
have the IP address of the ISPs web server.

Use the DNS console in administration tools, expand the server name, expand
forward lookup zones, click on the name of your domain, Then in the Action
menu click new host. That wil bring up the new host dialog enter www for the
name and give it the IP of the web site.

Unfortunately this will only resolve the ip address to the default web page
of the ISP's web server which is their own site. Do you have any other
ideas? Could I get a CNAME entry to work?

You can have many websites on the same IP address through the use of host
headers.

A CNAME still needs to resolve to an IP address, there are situations where
you would want a CNAME I personally don't like using them. In your situation
the CNAME must point to an external name that your DNS server will forward,
it cannot point to a name in your domain. Using the host should work if the
ISP does not change the IP your website sits on.

Just to add, if you will give me the FQDN of your public web site I will
give you instructions on exactly how to make it work.

I see thanks for the posting of the name, your public record is a CNAME so
here is what you do to keep it in sync.
In your "mbcpm.com" Forward Lookup zone, create a new alias, in the Alias
name field type "www" (without quotes) in the Fully Qualified name field
type "www3.ceinternet.com.au" (without quotes). If you have any other
records named www you will need to delete them first, You cannot have a
CNAME and a host with the same name in the same zone.

Your public record uses a CNAME pointing to another domian name, providers
do this in case they change the IP of the web site. they only need to change
one record instead of maybe hundreds.
