I have the same problem as "jens" timestamped: Dec 10
8:51AM. "Windows could not start because following file
missing or corrupt: \winnt\system32\config\system."
I tried recommended repair using the original W2K disk,
and using the repair console.

Fortunatly, I have 2 HDs and I formated D and installed
W2K so I can access (only my personal) files on C.
Any suggestions?

Is it possible to keep just the OS on D and all files and
programs (i.e., Adobe, Macromedia, Office XP Pro on C?

I have a Windows XP Pro disk I've never used (1st
holographic disk I ever saw). Is it practical or possible
to upg the OS on C to XP (my device is set up to boot
from a CD). One potential issue: my XP Pro is OEM - and
may only be suitable for clean installs.

Thanks
Xan

Have you tried using the recovery console to swap out the system hive with
the system hive located in the repair folder?

\winnt\repair\system

If you have performed a system state backup (or ERD or something like that)
you will have a REGBACK folder containing a backup of your Registry.

Your registry is located in:
\winnt\system32\config\system

Back up that file and try swapping in the system from the repair or regback
folder.
