This is the third time that I have posted this, and so far I have had no
replies. If this is because of my style, or because I'm boring or being
pointless, tell me. And if this is a while after the post time when you're
reading it, and no one else has replied, please reply saying that 1) You
know why my problem's happening, 2)You don't know why my problem's
happening, or 3)Nobody's replied because it's stupid (+ reason).

---Original message follows below------
Sometimes when I am using my computer there will be huge gaps where it
ignores me. I don't mean freezes - the mouse works, it notices I clicked
something (and the mouse cursor shows ' busy' while it loads it) but it
doesn't actually bother to bring any programs up. After a while (variable
amount of time; usually around 5 min but any longer and I get bored of
waiting and just reset the computer) it loads all the programs at the same
time and causing a huge slowdown that's almost equivalent to the pause - but
that's not really a problem in itself.

It does this with EVERYTHING - even ctrl-alt-del has to wait.

If anyone has the same problem, or any ideas at all on how to fix it, I
would be grateful. I looked on the microsoft knowledge base but it wasn't
mentioned there, so this is my last hope! boo hoo hoo hoo! Well, not really.
I could always reinstall, but I'd rather not.

Anyway, thanks for reading this, and more thanks if you reply (sensibly).

There's not enough information. Do you use FTP sites as explorer will appear to hang while it checks them out. What process is causing it (keep task manager open). Dbl click TM's border to switch to mini mode.

Make sure the indexing service is turned off and check for spyware and
viruses. Take a look in the taskbar and see if anything is running that's
sucking up CPU cycles.

It sounds like something is running, and until that process stops or pauses,
nothing else can get a byte in edgewise.

Replying to both of you here...

I have turned off Indexing Service (just in case), and checked for
adware/spyware/viruses/etc (I'd already done some of these). However, as
these pauses seem completely random - whether it's a minute or an hour after
turning my computer on, and whether I'm reading my email or have wandered
off to make a cup of tea - it's going to take a while to check. This also
means I'll have to keep the task manager up pretty much constantly (not a
problem, though; already-open programs are fine - it's just that I can't
open any more until the computer starts doing stuff again).

If it happens again in a day or two, I might reply again. Otherwise, thanks
for your help, and so far so good.
